I am surprised no one mentioned it but when they were just ahead of the next bunch I think the more important goal for Schahmann at that point was to secure the 6 second Bonus.

Confirmed:
The preliminary decision was made in the 2.4 kilometer long and on average 8.3 percent steep ascent to Litschstrasse. In the pouring rain, Alaphilippe went on the offensive several times, and Schachmann was also active. "I tried to drive out a gap with Alaphilippe to shake off van der Poel, but that didn't quite work," explained the Berliner, who never let the Dutchman out of his sight and was fighting his back wheel again when van der Poel was on the flat Attacked 3.5 kilometers from the target.

"In the end, van der Poel launched a strong attack. I played a little bit of poker, but nobody wanted to close the gap and so I tried to get to him myself," he said of the final, in which Alaphilippe no longer followed could, while Schachmann managed to catch up.

"I knew it would be very difficult to beat him in a sprint, so I went with them to make up a few seconds in the overall standings. I tried to keep up the pace to get a yellow," said the 27-year-old why he nevertheless replaced himself with the Dutch master in the management work on the last kilometers. "Unfortunately I missed two seconds", Schachmann said after crossing the finish line.

really looks like it, to be honest, yeah. The initial problem is relatively clear, as Cortina didn't have a transponder (for whatever reason), and therefor the timing must have recognized a large enough space between Poels and the Hirschi group, resulting in a 2s gap. Once Cortina was added again, this became neglectable, and all those guys got the same time.

But then adjusting that time from initially +3 seconds to 4... yeah, the only reason I can see for that really is to avoid the emberassment of having to hand out the yellow jersey a 2nd time.

Poels clearly crosses at 3 imo so whatever about today but if the overall at the end is decided by a second, it'll be very messy.

MvdP can take the jersey on bonus seconds alone (Alaphillippe too), so they just need a small enough group that the big sprinters aren't there anymore, but not sure they can drop them. MvdP could win either way though I think.
there are no real sprinters here anyway, Greipel, Matthews, Mvdp and Laporte are the best flat sprinters I guess.

There's plenty of sprinters here, only the top end is missing. Deceuninck have Hodeg and Steimle, Jumbo have Teunissen, Groupama have Stewart, Bora have Meeus, UAE have Gibbons, Trek have Theuns, AG2R have Sarreau, Movistar have Garcia Cortina, and Lotto have Degenkolb in addition to the aforementioned names. That's still a solid field for a hillier sprint stage.
