Grégoire and Vauquelin the only threats for Almeida & co, really. Almeida would need to regain one to two minutes before the MTT, which is hard but possible. O'Connor seems weak, so I don't think he's a big threat.

Vauquelin said he had incredible legs all day

Relevant GC riders, our thoughts and prayers worked and Gall somehow made it.

Both of them are good time trialists too so I wouldn't even put too much on Almeida pulling a load back there

I'm curious how Grégoire will fare when it comes to GC given that there's no extremely hard stage, but I think he will he will drop hard in one of the tougher climb. I'm still unsure on how to rate Vauquelin as he never really performed at World Tour level in mountain stages. What makes this race very interesting now is that neither FDJ nor Arkea have a strong enough team to control the race. Madouas still seems to be out of form this year and Kung seems less strong than he has been in the previous years.

So I can imagine that successful long range efforts could take place.

As far as I'm concerned this race is now rather open. Or confusing. Shorter stages like this can really make a mess :joycat:

Kepplinger could also be a problem, if in shape. The guy can climb pretty well.

Even lrcp just commented on this; UAE not acting like they have the favorite to win on their team.

Result must be wrong, it was Fortunato instead of Ballerini in that group. He could be a gc threat as well, but he seems to be in less good shape than at the giro (otherwise he would have been in the top group over that climb)

I also expected him to do better

It's the usual UAE *** whenever Pogacar isn't there.
Really poor from the team managers.

Today was a disaster result for Almeida. There's no other way around it.
On the other hand, the race just got much more interesting. Kinda like the Vuelta 2024.

An interesting route. Not because its great, but because its different. And a super interesting first stage which opened up the race in what looked to be a predictable race. Always a bit of an afterthought after Dauphine for myself, I must admit, but looks to be a very interesting race!
