Omg how hard can it be to have a moto film the front of a peloton???

Showing a group with Froome near the top of the last climb and never the front of the peloton is just insane.

And then having a third moto onfly following the Ben Swift group just shows they completely lost the plot and didn't even realise that O'Connor existed.

The clueless production from the Giro lives on.

Drones solve many of the issues you mentioned and if you watched Dauphine also riders swerve in motor draft almost always before motorcycle speeds up. Camera operator is all over the place.

One thing I have thought about with the Camera bikes would it be possible to design a combined front rear faring that could minimize drafting from the bike?

It's not just UAE, also Bora, QuickStep, Ineos, Decathlon come to mind that messed up. Especially those that had nobody in the break. Teams that came here with basically a certain top 10 in GC, have now invited riders that were very likely not going to try and go for a GC at first, but now very likely will give it a go. Not just O'Connor, Vauquelin, Fortunato, but also Kämna, Grossschartner, Bennett... It's quite possible Almeida can still round all these guys up, but can Vlasov, Van Wilder, Gall, Thomas/De Plus, etc? Some of the guys who assumed to have a shot at a top 5 or even podium are now at risk of having to settle for a tad less.

I believe virtually all the bikes being used in races, with one or two naked exceptions, have fairings to make them more aerodynamic. I don't know how one could minimise the drafting effect further. Most of the camera and police bikes have top boxes and panniers for equipment and all the other equipment. Then of course one or two fat blokes on the bike creates a nice drafting effect.

I think the answer is proper training and to throw them off the race if they transgress. Yellow cards for the motorbikes!

I watched whatever downhill was on Eurosport and the drones perfectly captured a rider.

I bet it's harder when there's hundreds of riders riding together than for example following a smaller breakaway?

I want drones. Preferably one drones for every rider and then you can buy an extra service to follow your favourite rider directly with his special drone 🤣

Watched the stage, came here to read the thread and I don't think Gregoire got enough credit for his ride.
Descended like a madman and extended his gap on the flat on a very strong group behind. Real ciclismo. I wouldn't underestimate him for GC.

Almeida will need to drop the hammer on Splugenpass. Entertaining racing ahead us!

Wow, a serious looking MTT to likely settle the final GC.

But after today hopefully O'Conner can take advantage of the head start he has been afforded this time. Felix Großschartner looks like a danger man ?
both were dropped yesterday, so I wouldn't be too hopeful. Vauqelin may be able to do well, but overall victory is probably a bit too much to ask for.

going by the Strava times, Almeida probably set a small attack at the climb yesterday, but I wasn't able to find any pictures or fan videos

Is the race honoring Gino mader in any way today? It's 2 years ago today that he sadly passed away
Stage 5 starts in La Punt, where the stage that killed him finished. So perhaps more likely they'll use that stage to honor him.

It's hard to believe it's been two years already, it feels so recent that I was scouring the internet for any piece of information fearing (and increasingly expecting) the worst.

That´s interesting.
Do we have even more information about how the peleton took this last climb? The TV coverage really didn´t show anything about this. I assume, only the fastest guys who use Strava are on that list? The first 7 riders who are on that list had also been part of the 16 rider GC group, who finished together in the end. Would be interesting to know the times of the other 9 guys to know, who had been the strongest on that climb..

Why do none of you consider Gregoire for the Overall here... I just don't see good enough riders here to take back the advantage he gained on stage 1... maybe I am overeacting but for me Gregoire wins the Overall here

O'Connor set the pace on the climb to get GC time. Nothing wrong with his ride when you consider he was 8 seconds off the top 4 at the top of the climb.

I am surprised that Schmid is in the break. There are other more suitable stages considering his climbing level this year. He could even do well in todays stage from the peleton.

Grégoire climbs well but I think he will lose a lot of time in the final MTT to the best riders who finished in the GC group yesterday. I'd expect him to lose 2 minutes on Almeida for example if the later is in the same form as last year. If the ITT had been flatter I'd have rated his chances much higher.

The profiles of the other stages play in his favor as there are no super tough mountain stage, but his climbing is inconsistent and I can see him drop a significant of time in one of these stages like in the Izua stage in Itzulia.

Edit: Also I don't think his team is strong enough to control the peloton well and I think he will be vulnerable to long range attacks.

And we're live in lovely Switzerland and being I'm watching the race on SRF I'm reminded of the classic Samuel L. Jackson line from Pulp Fiction while listening to the Swiss commentators - English German, motherfucker, do you speak it?!🤣

75km to go

Last year ITT.
For this type of time trial, I don't think Gregoire is superior to Vauquelin. Vauquelin lost two minutes.

It's impossible not to consider Romain Gregoire and Vauqelin big favourites for the GC now.
Ben O'Connor was already one of the top10 lock ins before the race started.

Right now it's looking possible for Almeida (if he channels his inner Pogi up the climbs), but it's looking unlikely to claw back so much time in only 7 days of racing.
