Cadel Evans arrives in Adelaide for 2014 Santos Tour Down Under

"Normally a week is better for me than one day so it shouldn't be a problem," the BMC Racing Team leader said.

"Yesterday was pretty solid, especially for the first race of the year.

"But it was a good solid hit-out, of course I would have liked a result but it's a stepping stone towards being in better shape for the Tour Down Under so I look forward to working on yesterday's result and progressing from there.

"I hope to be at a better and higher level at Tour Down Under, and I'll have my teammates around me to make things a bit easier for me.

"I was a little bit outnumbered at the nationals but that's OK, we have an Aussie WorldTour team and Orica rode formidably yesterday and they had Simon (Gerrans) there to finish off the job.

"Normally my best years always come after a good start so of course I always aim to have a good start to the year and this is no different."

So the team's are updated on the front page. Rohan Dennis leads Garmin-Sharp, and I am very interested to see how he gets on. Quite a young team, actually. Caleb Fairly is also of interest.

There are lots of talented young guns (ewan, zabel, mohoric,lecuisinier,...) i should be interesting to see how they do in their first race at WT level

So which riders do we feel are targetting the GC?

Gerrans for sure. I guess Sky would like Richie P to start off the season as he means to continue. Not sure about Evans, but I guess so as he is in good shape.

Rohan Dennis and Gesink would obvously have a good chance if this is not a training ride. A bit of me thinks that Ulissi will want this and will be fit as a flea.

Any other contenders I have missed? Anybody read the riders' tweets?

Of course this is not a training ride for someone like Rohan Dennis. More like his biggest goal of the season. The question is whether he has recovered from his TT crash, he was a DNF in the road race.

Jack Bobridge dark horse?
Maybe, but if Bobridge is, than so are Mark O'Brien and Darren Lapthorne, who were at least as strong last weekend.

Ben Hermans is usually strong here but he has Cadel with him. And Thomas will probably be good again aswell, but he has Richie.

Bakelants might want to show something for his new team.

I heared Bennett went well in the New Zealand nationals so he might be up there aswell, although he lacks explosiveness for some of the finishes and might lose some seconds there.

Gerrans is hot favourite again, like in the last two years. He's fast and boni seconds might be the goal to win. Other strong contenders ? Javi Moreno for sure, like in the last two years, Sky duo (Porte, Thomas), Dennis, Evans and Gesink. If Ulissi have some form he might be the biggest rival for Gerro.

Ulissi said he has other goals and will go to fine tune his form for races ahead. So he might just be for a ride.

Gesink we will not know. Gerrans vs Porte vs Evans vs ???

Can't stay until stage 2 really beside the 3 aussies.

I certainly hope that this isn't Dennis' main target for the season and I don't really see why he would base his season around January tbh.

I personally see it as a battle between Porte and Gerrans for the overall victory with another European rider to most likely feature.

If i was Harry Carpenter I would be quite annoyed. Overall the team is strong though.

Bobridge had attacked before the last lap as well though and only had one teammate. He also beat those two, so i think he was stronger.

For a kid like Dennis winning the TDU would be massive. It was for Slagter, who got a nice contract out of it and did little else for the season. It certainly will be for a kid from Adelaide.
