but were they racing at their best shape? i don't think so. he finished 5 minutes down on nibali at the vuelta

He got second at a stage that was won by a breakaway guy and not every rider is the same.

If I was Gesink I'd quit this Tour, good chance to win the Vuelta now.

JVDB has a rib injury. Hurts like hell, but ok to train with broken ribs. Vuelta is still possible if that is all.

I hope he does. I want them to crank it up with the chase so he loses lots of time and throws I'n the towel. Little point I'n continuing other then exposure and mgmt reasons.

Look I really wanted Gesink vs. VDB to be an epic battle for win. But now it just sucks, I would be happy to cheer Gesink if VDB crashed, but now that they both are gone, I dont have any favorite left.

Well you decided to take gesinks misfortune as a victory for your personal prediction and now less then 24 hours later your comments are stupid and wrong.

You gave your reasoning and you have been proven wrong. Maybe next time before prematurely stating rubish and using unfortunate events to your advantage you will post with some sense.

Ouch. Not just the ribs apparently, but a broken collarbone and shoulder blade. Amazing he even was able, however briefly, to try and ride on. That is definitely an injury that's gonna prevent him from properly training. Hope he can still get better for the Vuelta.

Gesink is not out just yet. Hes got a rest day then some realtively easy stages until Luz so reports of his demise might yet be exagerated.

A whole year down the drain. That's why I think these guys should take advantage of their form when they have it, like in the Dauphine. Look at Wiggins, he crashed out, but at least he still has that win.

The TdF is such an overriding goal for riders, it is farcical.

Problem for Wiggins is he doesnt rate his own Dauphine win himself. For him The TDF is the only race in world cycling.

I'm gutted for VDB2. It's never good to see a rider to crash out of a race, not to mention the most important race of the year. :(

I will say this though, some posters in here - they know who they are - were acting as though Gesink did not do enough to keep himself from taking a tumble and that VDB2 was a God on his bike and as a consequence has not, and will not fall off. As I mentioned before, it is a matter of luck in the end. Today has proven that, emphatically. I hope this shifts their perspective on this and that they can start thinking rationally before coming here and spewing their self-righteous babble. This is the most dramatic tour I have witnessed.
