I really hope tour of hangzhou or watever won't be in the world tour.
Yeah its great for Asian cycling, but it the parcours suck and I don't think anybody is bothered to race hard in it.
Why doesn't UCI have the brains to give the world tour spot to california or usa pro cycling challenge or even some race like tour of belgium, tour of austria, crit international.

Tour of beijing, hangzhou and down under. Whats the difference:rolleyes:

At least at the tour down under there was huge amounts of public interest with many thousands of people traveling to watch the race live on the sides of the roads. Do the races in china get any spectators? Also Australia has consistently been a top cycling nation over the last few years so it is right that they get a race, how many Chinese riders are in the WT?

Its CHINA, there are always thousands of people live on the sides of the roads, bike race or not.

It's important for the UCI to promote cycling in Asia and particularly in China as it would be financially healthy for cycling. However having two world tour races in China at this point is too much. It would be better if they had a single Tour of China rather than two races in two cities.
And certainly the organizing of the race should move away from the UCI owned company to another organisation. last years' Tour of Beijing parcourse sucked. One should be able to organize a really good Tour of China with multiple mountain stages. The mountains in China should actually make the Alps and Dolomites look like hills:D

You got a point but is UCI interested in making the race interesting?

Almost as importantly, do teams really need hard/interesting races at the end of the season? I mean it almost seems like being sent to a Tour of Beijing with it's sprint stages is already a punishment for some riders

Calm down, UCI will stand alone with no pro tour teams, can´t imagine it will take long time before the break out league will be a reality.

Hopefully not!!!

Fat patty boy days are numbered.

Press Release : Tour of Hangzhou postponed to ensure top quality event

28.08.2012

The UCI announces that the first edition of the Tour of Hangzhou will not take place as scheduled from 17th to 21st October, but will seek to be part of the UCI WorldTour calendar in 2013.

This decision was made by the UCI together with all the implicated parties – in particular GCP, the Chinese Cycling Association, the Chinese Sports Ministry and the city of Hangzhou – after an in-depth analysis of the situation two months out from the event.
Despite the efforts of all those involved in this initiative – and the UCI wishes to thank them for their commitment – not all the general conditions necessary to guarantee that the race would fulfil the UCI WorldTour quality criteria had been met.

“We put in a lot of work to stage the first edition of the event in 2012, but we needed a little more time to fine-tune certain internal matters in China,” said GCP Director Mr Alain Rumpf. “In choosing to delay the first edition, we can ensure that the event will meet the expectations of all our partners, as was the case last year with the Tour of Beijing.”

According to the UCI President, Mr Pat McQuaid, the Tour of Hangzhou remains nevertheless “a very important element in the UCI’s strategy for the development of cycling, and the decision to postpone the organisation of this event will have no negative consequences on the project.”

Could Fat Pat be more out of touch with the grass roots of the sport he allegedly administers?
I find the idea that a race can get WT status before it can even get up an running, absolutely ludicrous.

It makes a mockery of the dozens of established semi classics and quality stage races that have something more important than money:- a history.
