I'd hope the cyclist come up with a statement saying laborers in these regions should be treated the same way, instead of just displaying self-pity...
The problem is that cyclists are not laborers or workers anymore. They are divas and stars who live in Monaco and party with their sponsors.

"I'm disappointed, yes, because this could endanger the future of the Tour of Oman,? Merckx said after returning to the race hotel. ?When it rains in Paris-Roubaix is also dangerous. But they don't climb off their bikes.?

What he's saying is stipid as these are ywo different races. In Roubaix they dont habe to descend steep descents or ride through sandstorms with virtually zero visability. Plus freezing rain is quite different to 40+ degrees and having tyres exploding. So his comparison is rediculous.

Today I am proud of the statements made by the likes of Cancellara, Boonen and Sean Yates. Good for them I say!... stand up together and defend your rights.

Yes, it's disappointing that it was this particular stage that was cancelled as it promised so much, but lives are more important than entertainment and money.

You're right, and it's also ridiculous to compare them because:
Roubaix: the riders WANT to be there, the fans WANT to be there
Oman: corporate moguls and UCI decided to be there

As a result of which riders are able to do something as trivial as pedalling for substantial amounts of money.

To be honest if the organisers carry out the threats of canceling future editions, it would be a loss for Merckx (That would then explain why he's on the side of the Omani representitives to the ASO). However it would be a gain for the Ruta del Sol and the Volta ao Algarve if the big names are racing at these two which are struggling for money at the moment.

Its not just a loss for the Cannibal, ASO would lose cash, the groupies (GCN etc) will have to find work elsewhere.

But the fans might get a better deal.

Eddy Merckx is a complete tool. He is no different than a boss at a workplace with terrible working conditions who replies to complaints by saying the workers should just be happy to have a job. He is a reprehensible creature.

And any rider who said their competitors didn't want to race because of inferior equipment should be ashamed of themselves. Even if the tires were bad, the message seems to be they should have just sucked it up and raced like men. I wonder how they'd feel riding on such inferior equipment.
Messages like these makes it clear that riders have a long way to go before realizing the likes of Merckx don't give a rats *** about rider's safety.

I totally agree. Eddy Merckx is quoted at least 30 times a year in the cycling press and shows up at every event as a VIP. He could at best be described as an anachronism but I think delgado's description is better.

As a rule of thumb, whatever he says, take the opposite as the best option for the sport.

Sagan wins a sprint at last but for 5th was he recovering from that fall earlier in Qatar?..looks like he is doing a Cancellara approach to the season only peaking for the main goals
