It was definitely pre-2011 when Danish TV2 made a top-3 of bad ITTs, and "Chris Froome from Kenya" smashing into that official at a World Championship was an entrance.

Yeas, they are. I have commented elsewhere on the fora to that effect; I can see no reason, save powerful commercial interests, for their use in the pro ranks. Notice how many times we see riders kicking their "locked" mechs or having to swap bikes, often at crucial moments. This could have been ugly for Pinot.

Today's mechanical Campy and Dura Ace derailleurs shift like a dream. I've got enough battery-powered devices in my life.
