Cyclingnews article on the front page talks about rumors of Cancellara going to Sky (with a Brailsford denial) - doesn't sound like an especially good fit to me on first glance, but maybe it would be good for Cancellara to get pulled out of his comfort zone little bit, away from the Schlecks and all the guys from formerly Saxo. And he'd probably have better support in the spring too.

I think it's a perfect fit. Sky needs someone for the cobbles while Thomas and EBH keep learning and improving, and Flecha is not getting any younger. Cancellara absolutely needs to get away from Leotard/Sharck/whatever.

I haven't seen the rumours referred to in the article, but we do know Sky were very interested in him this time last year. As a Sky fan I kinda hope it's not true, but I would love to see Cancellara away from that new team.

Good points. I can definitely see why Sky would want him if he's affordable (which team wouldn't?...), but I just think Cancellara is the sort of person who wants a "harmonious" atmosphere in the team and that Sky might be a little too "big" for him, he's not exactly a cosmopolitan imo. But I could be wrong and that's exactly what he needs, I don't know.

Do Sky have room in their budget if Froome re-signs which will obviously move him into a BIGGER house, if Cav as expected re-signs and brings several of his lead-out men with him, and Cancellara as well?

Well, they'd struggle to find room if they signed Cav & Canc - they're almost overloaded as it is, purely from a numbers perspective, let alone the insane budget required.

But then again, cycling is an incredibly cheap sport to get involved with as a play thing (comparatively, obviously), so if James is still writing the cheques, who knows.

Cancellara to Sky? I think that's about as unlikely as Goss to Sky the other day.

Don't get me wrong, it would be a fantastic move for Sky if they could get him and I'm sure he'll get more support from Sky in the classics than he would at Radio Luxembourg. I just can't see it though.

A classics squad of Cancellara, Flecha, Thomas and EBH plus Stannard, Hayman (assuming he stays at Sky) etc. They could have an awesome lead out train for Cav too.

Looks almost super team catagory ;)

I wish Cancellara would move . I pity him last year at the spring classics. As crazy as he's performance on E3 was, no leader should have to go through that and I don't think the merger will do him any better.

Rebellin to Katusha... the forum will go maniac with this one

Wait, Sky needs someone for the cobbles, what? Thomas, EBH, Flecha w/ Hayman, Stannard? They've got a more viable cobbles squad than just about anyone. Next year EBH and Thomas already will have developed. People were already talking about GT being one of the strongest riders this season, and wasn't EBH injured?

I imagine that some people might not be too happy about suddenly being under the control of Bruyneel so even if they had a contract with Leo they might still want to find another team. This might be the reason for the Cancellara rumors. Too bad for him that BMC has already spent their big money or that would have been another obvious choice if he is in fact looking for other options.

Depends on what they want, really. With their current squad, they're more or less where Rabobank was this year with Breschel, Boom and Langeveld: a roster with lots of potential, but still without a top favourite. Any of them could take that last step forward and win one of the big races, but it's hard to expect more than a podium spot at best for now.

Cancellara signing would seem to conflict with Sky's brief of developing young British talent (Thomas, Stannard), and with Brailsford's personal affinity for EBH, and also with his ideas about growing a young team. But again, they did try to sign him last year.

As for budget, Froome (assuming he signs) and Thomas would both have got a hefty payrise this year.

Imagine the cobbles steamroller that would be Omega Pharma Quick Step with Boonen and Cancellara. Why would anyone else even start Roubaix?

[edit] and La Machine.

i would be surprised, nay shocked, if cancellara was only on a one year contract, unless he only signed one year if he wanted to see how leopard panned out.

It esp makes sense if rumours about Boasson Hagen leaving Sky are true. Dont think they are though. But accoding to this site he might be heading to SBS (but why would he do that if he wanna go for stages in the Tour?)

'Radio Luxembourg'. I like that a lot (as someone old enough to have listened to RL in its heyday as a kid)
