He did the Tour in 2011.

Sorry,my mistake.Anyway the point is still the same,he wasnt a leader,Wiggins was.(i know he abandoned, but that doesnt change anything)

I know its reasonable that he wasnt a leader, they had better riders to win,but I dont think its reasonable to stay in this team and be a slave for SDB.

The 2011 tour was when he was still learning the trade. Given his skill sets and age factor, he needs to be given leadership role as often as possible, something that the Sky management have overlooked.

Go to the Rui Costa thread with this discussion and keep this thread on topic. Thank you!

Last time i checked you are not a mod so don't try to act like one. Also when did discuss the teams a rider could end up become off topic talk on the " Transfers and Rumours 2013 > 2014" thread?

Anyway this talk about taking the best money is total BS imo.

Like some have already said, if he goes to Sky he will have to forget about his personal ambitions and without getting those results even if he turns out the best domestique ever, he will still not be making close to 2 mil per year on his next contract.

We all know athletes talk lots of crap but Costa always said his personal ambition as a rider was a higher priority than the money so this Sky rumour doesn't make much sense and its not like the source is the most reliable either . . .

Let's not exaggerate. He wouldn't completely have to forget about his personal ambitions at Sky. Certainly if he wants to become a GC grand tour rider then that would be a serious issue but outside that there would be plenty of leadership chances in hilly classics and a few big one week stage races too (like Suisse). In that context as a 27 year old potentially being offered a three year contract worth significantly more than any other offer then he'd be mad not to take it in my opinion. We've seen lots of things happen in cycling that can stop very promising careers dead in their tracks. Get the money in the bank!

Having said all that, like you say I don't think there is any substance in this Sky rumour. For one thing I'd fancy that BMC could outbid Sky for Costa's services pretty easily. Also, logically Sky must have used up the vast majority of their remaining available budget for 2014 on expensive extensions for Froome, Porte and Henao.

Why does it really matter to you? It's only a couple of pages of talk anyway! Just flick through it in a matter of seconds if you're not interested.

SKy did just pick up a major new sponsor from News Corp.

But 21st Century Fox is just News Corp's new name (who originally sponsored Sky anyway). The name is now shown on the kit so perhaps there has been some increase but I doubt it's a significant one. As good as he is, Sky don't really need Costa anyway which I think makes it unlikely that they'd be willing to offer the sort of money that would be needed to sign him.

They're much more likely to continue to sign promising talents like Henao, Dombrowski, Boswell, Earle etc together with good solid domestqiues like Cataldo and Kiryienka. The only time they've really changed from that strategy was with Cavendish and that move didn't work out from a sporting aspect anyway.

Each team offers him different things, For Costa at Sky he will have much less opportunities to be leader but they likely can offer him a lot of money. So the question is, does his main motive in signing for a new team lie in making sure he has the chance to lead in races or lie in how much money a team will give him.

That's how this discussion relates to this thread. ;)

sky can't offer more money than bmc. bmc have unlimited budget. stop talking this bs rumor anyway. some idiot calimed his uncle is a doctor at sky. it's laughable and ridiculous to take serious

I agree with Ryo on this one. BMC has more money, needs Costa much more and will offer him everything he wants.

Evans is old and will leave next season and Hushovd will leave this season so even if BMC doesn't want to put more money into the team they know they will have some spare cash from riders leaving.

JRanton that mentality may suit some riders but Costa is known to be somewhat selfish and has one of the best winning mentalities on the peloton so doesn't he think like the typical above average rider who wants to cash in on some good money before people notice his results are just flukes.

Anyway its a shame he is leaving Movistar, a Quintana/Costa combo with both riders on the top of their game after Valverde retired would be something to behold.

Oh and Ryo tune it down a bit on the insults please.

Of course but he will be the one who decides which Grand tours Uran rides unless there is something written in the contract.

if uran wants to do the tour, he will do the tour. simple as that. in fact he even wants another colombian rider to assist him.

I'm not insulting anywhere

Nah Uran will definitively ride the Tour.

While Cav had a good Tour, the win on the bourdeux stage is imo one of, if not the very best win of his career, but it was below what was expected from him. So they will want Uran there to make sure that even if Cav gets beaten again they still have something to show to the sponsors.
