I really hope Wiggins wins the world TT so that he can retire on a high, as can't see him being much use to Sky next year. That would leave some room for a climber like Nieve to come in.

How useful do you reckon Deignan will be?

Deignan can be quite useful but he's obviously nowhere near the class of someone like Nieve for instance. Wiggins is unlikely to retire when he has a £2m+ contract waiting for him in 2014.

Fair point, maybe he'll just cruise by putting in half hearted efforts to pick up the pay cheque like he did this year! At least it's Murdoch's money he's wasting so it's not all that bad!

Why on earth would Costa go to Sky? At BMC he could be an outright leader for every race where he wants to be, at Sky he'll just be another cog in the machine.

Yeah, it makes no sense at all. Also, doesn't the Methylhexanamine positive test rule him out as an option for Sky?

He was cleared of any wrong doings and the positive was proven to be a legit case of contamination so it shouldn't make any difference.

I hope it does tho

It's still a positive test despite the contamination (athletes responsible for what's in their body etc) so I'd be surprised if Sky go for him. Just from a PR perspective not because they're truly committed to a zero tolerance policy (they aren't).

Perhaps they are offering more money then BMC is willing to offer. I sincerely hope though that he is not basing his decision of what team he will go to on how much they will pay him.

Yeah, that would be truly shocking. I mean what type of person would consider the financial aspect to be the most important part of their decision on which company/team to join. Oh, that would be just about everyone in every walk of life.

 I didn't say people don't do that or that it would be surprising. I said I hope he doesn't. I'd rather see him go to a team based on the support and leadership they can give him as opposed to how much money they can give.

nah, that's just because he's going to Sky, so everyone thinks Sky= greedy Costa
if it wasn't Sky, Costa's signing for another team wouldn't be seen in a negative way

maybe Pinarello had a word in the talks for this move from Movistar to Sky

The question would be the next contract.

He's 26 (27 in October). If there was a three year contract on the table offering significantly more money than any other offer but with less leadership opportunities then I'd still take the higher offer and so would Costa. It's not like you would lose that much value for the next contract offer if you could show yourself as an excellent domestique during that time and he'd still naturally get some chances to shine himself. A bit like Purito at Movistar.

Of course Costa will go to the team that pays the most. He's a pro = he's riding for money.

Even if that were true, he can think about his long-term prospects. If he signed with Sky for a little more money than e.g BMC offers him, he would earn more for the duration of that contract, but he would be unlikely to get top results, so his next contract will be for a significantly lower amount.

Plus there's the pride of a rider (and you could argue that Costa is a proud man) that he wants to be a true leader for a change. The analogy with everyday world fits nicely there: if you could be your own boss for a little less money and with a perspective to earn way more if your ideas work out, you'll take that chance rather than go to a company where you would work under another boss(es) for a little more money and not so much perspective.

However, if Sky were to offer him leadership in the Ardennes, it might be an OK move for him to go there even if he has to be a lieutenant for Porte in the Giro afterwards. At BMC he might be a leader for a GT, but right now he doesn't seem to be a rider to win one. He would certainly not be a leader in the Ardennes so even with more overall freedom, he wouldn't get a real chance to win/podium at a big race (i.e a monument or a GT).

Go to the Rui Costa thread with this discussion and keep this thread on topic. Thank you!

We're discussing Costa's future team, how is that not on topic with transfers and rumours?
