He seemed a bit annoyed with his role and lack of freedom at this Tour, I wonder whether he might just skip the Tour in the future. Although we don't know how long Cadel will still be going for GC's

He actually was not planning on riding the 2013 Tour de France, but he did so because his season has been lacklustre so far.

I would guess this is Cadel's last year at GC at the tour, maybe full Giro focus next year so that should free the team up for Gilbert, (and Im sure Cadel will ride for Gilbert at Lombardia later in the year).

I don't think BMC will be building their whole team around TJVG next year

I don't know about that. From the moment Sky went from having no obvious GT contender on their team to having at least two, stage victories were always going to be a distant second to GC ambitions. That's not really compatible with having the best sprinter in the world on your roster in the long run.

Philip Lavery, a 22 year old Irish rider, will be a stagiare with Cofidis from the beginning of August. Lavery got this chance the old fashioned way: Moving to a good French amateur side and winning a load of good amateur races. So good luck to him.

Lavery had previously been on An Post and then the British Conti outfit Node 4, so he's been about a bit for a young lad.

I don't know about that. From the moment Sky went from having no obvious GT contender on their team to having at least two, stage victories were always going to be a distant second to GC ambitions. That's not really compatible with having the best sprinter in the world on your roster in the long run.

Cav would've won the Maglia rosso in 2012 with Renshaw in his train as he would not make the mistake Kennaugh did going into that finish in Montecatini.

Oh sure, Cavendish would have picked up some more wins with a highly skilled leadout. I'm not suggesting otherwise.

But ultimately, Sky, once they realised that they could win GTs were always going to pick squads with a heavy, heavy, lean in that direction. And Cavendish is too ambitious to settle for that indefinitely. Why should he, after all?

I'm tipping noone they'll go a team short. At some stage you have to think of the long term good of the sport. Well one can dream.

I have a feeling BMC will get the cheque book out especially if Evans retires. But the fact is their best riders are not performing at their best although not much more could be expected from Evans at 36. Frank and TJVG could be developed but Gilbert simply could not finish off the team's work in the Ardenne races. I think BMC will still buy some more climbers and maybe a good sprinter. GC will be a problem if TJVG can't do better in grand tours.

I wonder if someone like Wiggins might be more useful the way Dowsett was or Rogers - as an insight into Sky practices. Expensive insight mind, especially if Wiggins stays unmotivated.

Hunch is Wiggins will more or less leave the road behind and concentrate on TT and team pursuit with rio in mind. 2 golds, however unlikely, would have him overtake Hoy.
