Lack of funds perhaps? I thought they were going to step up this year. I heard rumors not too long ago that UCI asked Europcar & IAM if they would be WT so that 18 teams could be in WT.

André Cardoso to Garmin - Sharp with one year contract. Portuguese newspaper 'A Bola' rumour.

Couldn't find anything on the "A'bola" site and for the first time in like 40 years my father didn't buy the printed version today. Got a link?

Anyway if true this could be very good for Cardoso. I was a bit disappointed with him last year but he seems to be going better now. Always looked like a good talent with a good engine.

I find it hard to believe, he doesn't fit in the Garmin style of rider. I would be glad if it's true though, even if there he's just a simple domestique.

Great signings for Ag2r. Did their sponsor significantly up their budget last year, I wonder? Because their signings last year and this seem much, much, stronger than their team was before.

Probably a combination of upping the budget to avoid scares of dropping to the ProConti level after the desperate points signings of 2012 (Zargari, Shpilevsky, Gazvoda) to stay WT, and a bit more prize money coming in this season as a result of the better signings last season.

Throw in a touch of the expenditures on riders like Valjavec and the Efimkins ending a couple of years back for good measure.

I read roumor on this site that IAM and MTN were asked, but both refused. So most likely it will only be 17 World Tour teams next season. Which means more wildcards and less good teams racing in China.

Garmin is transitioning into a GC team for a while. They still need a bit more of mountain domestiques to have a decent support in all important races. As this year proved, they weren't able to send a good support team for Dan at Vuelta, after having a pretty much GC-oriented team for Giro, TdF and all those American races in August.

Will be interesting to see if Morton, Dennis and Brown can contribute to this next season. First two of them were pretty much saved from too much effort this year. So will be Brown next year, perhaps.

Excuse my ignorance but who is Bad Meat?

I know Rui Costa said he isn't taking any Movi riders with him, but I'm surprised we're not seeing any attempt to buy him some support.

It does sound sort of legic in the article :)

Well with most of the garmin old guard nearing retirement Cardoso could certainly be a good help for martin.
And judging by his worlds performance he can probably play a role in the Ardennes. Surprising move to me but I hope he can make it.
(Should I change my avatar or should I root for Garmin even when they chase someone because 14th place is at risk?)

Yeah, there's room on that team for someone like him to be an important domestique, if he shows the form. Their main leaders are climbers/hilly classics sort of riders but they are in the process of losing most of their main support for those kind of races. VDV is gone, Stetina is gone. Danielson has been good recently but he's getting on. After that, they really don't have much in the way of established climbers (as probably became clear to Dan Martin the second he looked at the Vuelta team sheet). They have brought in Slagter and they have some promising kids, but there are an awful lot of spaces on start lists remaining for guys who can climb.

This makes sense. It's just that there has been such a drastic improvement in the level of their squad. For just about any kind of race they now have a rider or two who might be talked of seriously as a potential winner (albeit normally as a dark horse). A year ago they didn't really have any leaders who would be talked of in that way in any big race.

They are probably the most improved squad at WT level. Even ahead of Movistar. At least on paper, because in practice while racking up a huge number of podium finishes they still don't win as often as they should.

uff bad reading by me. yes ag2r has improved a lot but I don't think their budget increased any. maybe for next year it will. just smart buying. betancurt and pozzo didn't sign for money with ag2r but for opportunities and gadret has a big contract and he will be gone

Ya, i agree with this. They have been very smart with their signings the last 2 seasons.

It just goes to show how stupid it was when they were throwing money at nobodies from Asia to bring points.
