Assuming that Armchair Cyclists calculations are right, the important question is if there is any really big point scorer still available for DD to sign. It will have to be a 100 point rider if only the top 5 count and a 60 pointer if more rider count for the second round of calculations, Either way, there can't be many still looking for a contract.

Maybe. But there is no Vicioso on the list which I find odd.

Edit: Ok, the guy will be 40 next year. Maybe he is going to retire.

Ion Izagirre has also been rumored to go to Bahrain. Maybe they are going to build two teams within one. A Spanish and an Italian.

Maybe Cancelera could be persuaded to remain (until after Paris Roubaix) if the money is big enough...He could just turn up and sit in the peloton

Also it could be risky signing witha team that could go down...No guarantee that you will get invites to all the WT races that matter, like the Giro or Vuelta , etc

But Bahrain could use another GC rider for the GT(s) and stage races that Nibali isn't targeting. And more climbers. At least 3 more climbers.

Siutsou is a great engine/all-rounder and Visconti is an useful punchy rider to send in tactical breakaways but they need some more pure climbers. Nibali himself is the only real climber on the team.

But on the otherhand given the increase in the number of WT races next year it might be easier and better to be able to just go where the invites are and miss Ride London , etc ...Hard fielding a team for them all

Worst thing they can do right now is try to find riders for certain roles, pay them a big wage and find out they aren't good enough. Almost all big riders are signed up, it's better to wait until next year than finding yourself stuck for several years with overpaid mediocre leaders.

Worst thing they can do right now is try to find riders for certain roles, pay them a big wage and find out they aren't good enough. Almost all big riders are signed up, it's better to wait until next year than finding yourself stuck for several years with overpaid mediocre leaders.

They're probably better off trying to plunder the U23 scene and investing in 2018. The Orica model looks to be the way to go.

Yes, everyone was in awe of Alberto Bettiol absolutely smashing those minor places in the least-watched WT races. It's the kind of cycling we all we want to see. Screw Cavendish and his "four Tour stage wins". How lame. If Cavendish were a true winner he'd be getting 7th in the GP Montreal.

Poor Belgian Lotto. Well I guess they would also get invitations to all major races, they're part of the cycling history since 2001, they've put so much into the sport and iirc Soudal signed a 5 year deal, so they'll be going a while.

But they are in the top 16, so Lotto are safe.

As I understand it, only 4 teams are relevant to the calculation (as Sean Kelly would have it): Gian and DD as teams outside the top 16 this year, and Bora and Bahrain as new applicants. 3 places are available, unless the UCI ignore their own rules, which would surprise no-one.

Which means that Dimension Data still need someone else, even assuming Henao has gone there, to get their place.
However, I have assumed that WT points can be given, for the purposes of this calculation, to riders that are not on WT teams in 2016: they do not appear in the WT rankings. Without the points of Selig and Bennett, Bora's score falls to 796, which makes no real difference to us, but without the points of Gasparotto and Colbrelli, Bahrain's points fall to 418, way behind Dimension Data. So not knowing whether it is points earned or points issued that are taken into consideration, we don't know whether Bahrain or DD are on course to miss out.

Who is off contract and still unsigned with UCI points? Jay McCarthy with 68 points is the highest I can think of off the top of my head. I did hear a rumour he's going to Bora but I haven't seen anything official.

From memory, Cancellara and Purito are retiring, Warbasse is going to Cannondale and Castroviejo is staying put.

Your list makes McCarthy a potentially important signing, his points are almost enough to save any one of those teams without any extra signings.

Only last week I count Dani Moreno, Javi Moreno, Anton, I. Izagirre, J. Insausti, Rodriguez, Losada, Landa, only in spanish riders. Someone is trying to get new contracts, that's for sure.

The issue has already been discussed in Cannondale thread. The point of being in WT is being competitive in more than just TdF, as you can get TdF invitation as a pro-conti.
Moreover, I wasn't comparing them with anybody in that post so I don't know why you were so disturbed. It's hard to argue that Cannondale could have done much worse than they actually did in 2nd half of the year. They were in the mix in every WT race after TdF apart from Eneco and Hamburg (where Wippert crashed while being set up for a sprint).
