Certainly a talented rider but at 32, am just trying to see precisely where he fits in other than being a general domestique. Yes, he's a good TTer and not a bad cobbles rider but not sure he'll necessarily be a "main man". Certainly a strong guy to send up the road and useful in a TTT; ok in hills or even in lead-outs but not sure that's anything Orica's looking at.
In short, I can most certainly see him being a very useful rider but one suspects its either money or a multi year deal that's the lure rather than the promise of "more opportunities".
Does Orica need another "main man"? They have Chaves and the Yates for GTs, and Hayman, Durbridge, Trentin, Albasini and Edmondson for classics. A few more selfless domestiques are needed there. Bauer would be a very good fit, a nice replacement for Keukeleire in stage races.[/quote]
To answer your point, of these "main men", lets examine their respective futures.
- Chaves: contracted to end of 2019. Realistically their main GC man
- Yates x2. Both off contract at end of 2018. Will they stay or go elsewhere or may it be one stays/one goes ? Haig may be an "in-house" replacement for one
- Hayman: renewed for next year but that's realistically end of the road.
- Durbridge: probably now their no1 man for cobbles
- Trentin: probably like for like replacement for Keukeleire
- Edmondson: hopefully will be retained but probably the development project as cobbles contender
- Albasini: still a great trouper who brings in results but realistically nearing zone of diminishing returns. Who else do they have for Ardennes ?
I would say Kreuziger should be seen as the other main Ardennes man but will he stay beyond 2018 ? Can you look at either Yates or Chaves for these races .... or is it a case of hoping either Haig or Power can develop ? Impey is useful in these races but arguably the "puncheur" is an area where Orica is currently a question mark beyond those experienced names. Whilst Bauer isnt bad in the hills, are these races really his thing as he seems more a man for cobbles where Orica is actually looking OK going forward ?
On the subject of hard grunt; they already have Tuft (who will retire end of next year), Bewley, Hepburn & J-J (the latter 3 being younger than Bauer). Kluge and Mezgec can also ride cobbles and are probably more accomplished lead-out men.
I completely agree that he would be an excellent worker but ,barring such factors as an increased paypacket or being seen as "on the outer" at QST; why else would he be going to Orica just as a grunt ? I would consider him as a "useful acquisition" rather than being any "enhancement".
