It sucks pretty hard that a team supposedly about developing danish cyclists and in particular taking talented riders that don't get deals with WT teams after U23 age has so far signed nine completely mediocre guys from other countries for next year.

There must surely be some fluctuation in the number of riders who fit that description who are good enough and available in a small country. Even in Denmark, which produces quite a lot of talented riders. Denmark has a lot of WT pros and three Conti teams. There may simply not be as many riders who fall between those two levels this year.

Over the last six years, BORA - hansgrohe developed Sam Bennett into one of the best sprinters in the peloton. Against this background it however became more and more difficult to align the team’s and rider’s goals.
Maybe this just doesn’t translate well from the German, but it doesn’t sound here like they’re giving Bennett much credit for winning a metric boatload of races for them, but are happy to claim all the credit for “developing Sam into one of the best sprinters.”

I could be overthinking this. Either way, it’s not coming across as the most amicable parting of ways. Not that that was ever likely.

It says exactly the same in german. The team seems to be really pissed.

It’s a bit weird. What were they expecting? That once UCI arbitration held that his statement that he intended to extend his contract was enforceable that Bennett would just say, ok then I don’t mind spending more of my peak years playing third fiddle? I had been hoping to be the lead sprinter on the strongest team in the world but it’s ok now I’m looking forward to hardly getting to sprint again at the Vuelta?

They must have known that he was never going to agree to stay another year unless they guaranteed him the Tour or Giro and they certainly knew that they weren’t going to do that. It’s not as if cycling teams can pay star athletes so much that they will happily sit on the bench counting their money like some footballers. If you have more top class leaders in a specialty than you can give top class opportunities to, one or more of them will move on.

It will be interesting to see how Bora manage Sagan and Ackermann in the years to come. It may be that with his billion points jerseys already won, Sagan fancies a Boonen like transition away from bunch sprinting. If he’s planning something like that it might all work out. If Sagan still wants to sprint at the Tour, similar problems will arise again because Ackermann is too fast to accept second pickings forever.

Those are good signings, particularly Vakoc should be very useful

It's all about getting invites to races, by signing these riders they'll get a programme that they can use to market their U23 riders.
