It’s quite amusing how Archbold has slotted into the very limited “Irish” cycling infrastructure. His move to the European Tour was with An Post. His first European win was at the Ras. He was brought to Bora to support Bennett. After Bora dropped him after he missed most of a season injured, he was signed by Aqua Blue. When Aqua Blue went under, he went to Evo Pro. And then he was brought back to Bora to support Bennett and now follows him to DQS. He should really be entitled to an Irish passport at this point.

Is he the only rider of any nationality who rode for all three Irish UCI teams (not counting the Italian teams that used to domicile themselves in Ireland for tax reasons)?

Fellow NZer Aaron Gate has only ever rode for those 3 teams professionally. But I don't think they were the only 3 Irish pro teams. One of the McQuaids had a team and there was definitely 1 more but maybe like the Italians it was a shell company it's too far back for me to remember

I didn’t know about those two teams. Were Team Murphy and Gunn as terrible as the cq results indicate? Or is the database incomplete back then? Or were they basically a domestic amateur team that took out a UCI license to get into a handful of races abroad?

Also the Swedish guy, Fredrik Ericsson, I wonder what his story was. A career consisting of two and a half seasons spent on three Conti teams in three countries in his late 20s, but he had good results.

M & G merged with An Post after season I dont remember much about them but I think it was a fairly small set up

Fredrik Ericsson was more of a mountain biker than road cyclist. Nowadays he is coach and have written a few books about training.

Ok that makes sense. His results level on the road just seemed a bit too good for a guy with his career progression. If he wasn’t mainly a roadie it fits much better.

Plus this tweet might suggest former stockbroker, and Canyon DHB Rider this year, Alex Richardson will also ride for them next year. He's had a good couple of seasons the past two years, winning a few national road series races as a solo privateer rider last year and then got a couple of pro Kermesses and 1.2 UCO races in Belgium this year

Interesting signing, Gaze has won a couple of U23 national crit titles and can handle a hilly course well. Will be looking forward to seeing how he goes.

He might have a mainly MTB orientated calendar similar to Petter Fagerhaug, who only raced the U23 Norwegian Champs. Although the fact he was a stagaire this year, may suggest his racing calendar might be more like van der Poel possibly.

He was one of their strongest domestiques this year and made their Giro squad, so it seems he’s a bit unlucky that the merger with Katusha happened along with the resulting influx of WT riders. I haven’t heard any rumours either.

I had completely missed this. The past year wasn't exactly a success for him at Axeon. Still wondering what type of rider he'll grow into. If i may venture a guess, i'm leaning towards Ardennes/hilly classic and/or stagehunter. Can't picture him as a GC candidate, as he 's always been very irregular in his achievements. Going deep one day, usually meant getting dropped the next day. But he's very sly and races tactically.

Yes, but until now he has only been good when the road goes uphill. His main strength are his crazy accelerations when he attacks uphill. Still, let's wait and see, his junior team has a rep for trying to get as many wins out of their riders as possible, not developing the really well.

I think I certainly did read at one point that the minimum number would be 27. Maybe it was changed later but I'm sure I had read the number to be 27 at some point.

The NTT announcement did sound like their final roster.

Each UCI WorldTeam must employ at least 23 27 riders, 4 sports directors and 10 other staff (coaches, doctors, paramedical assistants, mechanics, etc.) on a full-time basis for the whole registration year.

I had no idea that it was as low as 23 last year.
