has wiggo been confirmed at garmin for next year now?

There was an interview with JV today, and he indicated Wiggins was still on the team. He said it would have cost 15 million for anyone to buy out the contract.

Wow, for some reason Columbia (the most successfull team of the last two years) is losing a whole lot of guys! So far:
Kim Kirchen
Thomas Lovkvist (rumoured)
Kanstantsin Siutsou
Simon Gerrans
Greg Henderson
Marcus Burghardt
George Hincapie

Why is this?

In the press release for the new Garmin guys Vaughters said they had recruited the climbers to help Vandevelde and Wiggins in the tour next year and it seems like a comment like that would be strange if Wiggo was leaveing.

Well, Gerrans is leaving Cervélo not Columbia...

They are also getting alot of new riders into the team as well so I think it's just a matter of normal progression.

It might be that Cavendishs dominance in the team makes other riders willing to seek new opportunities to ride for themselves rather than being backup for Cav all the time.

Even for the GC guys it's not a perfect situation when half the team is a leadout train and only a few guys are there to help in the climbs.

Another reason might be economic. Cavendih probably costs a fair penny and when the rest of the team are up for renegotioation and they have been successful they are probably worth a good deal as well so it would actaully be cheaper for Columbia to simply let them try their luck in other teams and replace them with new younger talents that are yet to demand such a big pricetag but still without weakening the team in any way.

"replace them with new younger talents that are yet to demand such a big pricetag but still without weakening the team in any way."
If things cost a lot compared to seemingly same goods there usually a reason. To think, not having a Hincapie won't weaken the team in any way is putting no value on experience. It seams to me Columbia trying their luck not the value guys that are leaving.

I guess with Nabali, Krueziger, Basso and Pellizotti it's only logical that they're moving resources away from the spring classics and onto the Grand Tours.

Hincapie is a bad example, of course his experience is worth alot.

If you instead look at Lovkvist Siutsou Henderson and Burghardt for example while those riders are of course somewhat experienced they aren't riders you would keep just because of their experience. And since those riders have had good successes it's logical to assume that their salaries would be likely to go up so if you can find new young riders that at least have the talent and possible capasity to at least rival the talent of these riders but at a fraction of the cost then we don't have to stretch our imagination to see that it would be a possible reason why so many riders in Columbias roster are changing.

Contador will speak to the press on Saturday about his 2010 plans.

new iPod touch on the 9th.

Thanks Hog. Would you mind giving the bumbling CyclingNews journos a hint to where Contador will be making his announcement? They've yet to receive the invite from Armstrong's Twitter or Demand Media.

No problems: Contador will show up at the Look booth for an autograph signing session at Eurobike then the later press conference.

I don't speak a word of dutch, this was on a Team Sky fan page...anyone care to translate? The fan site claims Cancellara as moving to Sky, when put into various online language tools it translates as this, just wondered if it is a gross mistranslation! Seems a bit weird to me though, he's always come across as very loyal...though as they say, money talks...

Aaah just seen the date of this article... Ballan already to BMC so can't be that accurate! Apologies!

Sorry if I confused it, the link to a Dutch site was found on a Team Sky fan page, but was not in English. Therefore your translation was not of much help! But thanks anyway!

Levi's Joining Radio Shack and 2010 TDF Aspirations

I just read the article about Levi's joining Radio Shack. He said that his goal for 2010 is to win the TDF. What?!?! He rode the TDF with Astana this year. Didn't he see what went on between Lance and Alberto?!?! What makes him think that he has a snowball's chance of winning next year's TDF on a team that is being specifically designed for Lance? Or maybe he's talking about competing in some other unknown tour of france. Listen, Levi, in this year's tour, you proved to be pretty deep in Lance's pocket against Alberto. So, don't go fooling yourself with aspirations of winning the TDF next year. Alberto is a more qualified grand tour champion than either you or Lance, and you saw how Lance treated him. If you're riding for RS and planning to win next year's Tour, what makes you think that you'll even get a quarter of the respect that Lance gave Alberto? Your best chance of winning was in '07, and we all remember what happened there. I respect you as a racer, but come on...After all that Lance has done to show that those of us past 35 can still be competitive, why would you come out acting as though your memory is starting to fade?

i wish rogers signed for rabobank, to me he could be such a great domestic in the tour (strong TTr and climber... perfect), and have freedom to lead in some other races (giro maybe?) In all due respect, the guy aint gonna challange in the tour.

Team Sky: Who's riding for the new superteam?

*******Source = http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest/395550/team-sky-who-s-riding-for-the-new-superteam.html ******

It's transfer season in the world of professional cycling. Rumours are rife about who is going where for 2010 (and beyond), but there's one team that is the focus of more speculation than any other - Team Sky.

The British-based team, backed by the satellite broadcaster, was unveiled earlier in the year and since then many names have been linked to the squad. Some names are likely, others tentative - one thing is certain, the squad itself is remaining tight-lipped about its selection.

The team has lofty aspirations - a ProTour licence application has been lodged with the Union Cycliste Internationale and there has been talk of aiming for the 2010 Tour de France. Serious aims, for which you need a serious team.

Whilst other ProTour squads are naming their 2010 rosters, no official announcement has been made by Sky regarding its team. Here we take a stab at naming the likely line-up, based on what we've heard through the grapevine, via rumours and a bit of speculation.

We know that the squad will include a backbone of British riders, a number of which will come from the defunct Barloworld squad - Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas and Steve Cummings. Then there are the younger riders who have been through British Cycling's development academy system, such as Ian Stannard, Jonny Bellis, Ben Swift and Peter Kennaugh.

We can also speculate that the squad will need top-class international riders to contest ProTour races - such as Edvald Boasson Hagen, Juan-Antonio Flecha and Kurt-Asle Arvesen. And an Australian newspaper appeared to confirm the Aussie contingent of the team on Wednesday.

One very big question mark hangs over the name of Bradley Wiggins. His current Garmin-Slipstream team are adamant that he's not moving, yet Sky does need a Grand Tour contender and his name keeps cropping up. After Wiggins' fourth place at the 2009 Tour, he would seem to be perfect for the team. We've added his name to the list of possibles.

Although not originally believed to be on the shortlist, Russell Downing put himself in contention after his brilliant win in the Tour of Ireland. Having the top British based rider on the team would give a huge boost to the domestic scene.

Almost definites (16)...
Chris Froome (GBr)
Geraint Thomas (GBr)
Steve Cummings (GBr)
Ben Swift (GBr)
Jonny Bellis (GBr)
Peter Kennaugh (GBr)
Juan-Antonio Flecha (Spa)
Kurt-Asle Arvesen (Nor)
Morris Possoni (Ita)
Edvald Boasson Hagen (Nor)
Thomas Lovkvist (Swe)
Serge Pauwels (Bel)
Lars Petter Nordhaug (Nor)
Matthew Hayman (Aus)
Simon Gerrans (Aus)
Chris Sutton (Aus)

Possibles (5)...
Michael Barry (GBr)
Ed Clancy (GBr)
Russell Downing (GBr)
John-Lee Augustyn (RSA)
Liam Killeen (GBr)

“Definitely the idea of working with the young team and helping to build the program appealed to me,” Hincapie said in a team press release. “I know a lot of the American racers on the team already.” The American-Swiss squad is making a major bid for Pro-Tour status by also signing reigning world champion Alessandro Ballan.

“When we started with the idea of the BMC Racing Team, we had a plan which would one day elevate us to the highest level of professional racing,” said co-owners Jim Ochowicz and Andy Rihs. “That day is today.”

For Hincapie, perhaps that day came back on July 19th in Besancon, France. The day he decided he’d never ride with Lance again.

- In other words Lance is a khunt.
