The interview after the 2004 Dauphine is interesting!

Given:

1. The assertion in the book that Lance reported these guys to the UCI

2. That I (and a few others) were approached to do the same with another cyclist - thus indicting the source, and not the cyclist. In other words, there are some in this sport that have no problem being on pixie dust and then trying to ban their competition for doing the same.

Yes, the observation by Lance that Hamilton and Mayo were 'flying' underscores why Coyle may have been motivated to release these clips.

Dave.

ONE = Armstrong?

closer to taker = Armstrong's partner = Sheryl Crow?

Side effects of Andriol = Cancer?

So Sheryl got cancer because she doped to ride Alpe d'Huez?

One interesting thing I got from the book was the current status of some people:
"Motoman" - owns a bike shop selling Nike, Oakley, Trek, Livestrong - not prepared to talk doping and LA;
Kevin Livingston - Runs a bike shop selling Nike, Oakley, Trek, Livestrong - not prepared to talk doping and LA (he appears to be a tenant of LA at Mellow Johnnys?)

Any other names to add to this list?
Cheers,
Mort

Walsh's piece on Tyler is good. There is a lot in there.

I think many of us can agree with this. For me it was hard to watch the mess Tyler made. I am so glad he wrote this book

“Of all the guys in the US Postal team who lied, your lies were the hardest to stomach,”

Writing the book was the hardest thing I’ve done in my life. I’m proud that I’ve done it but I’m not proud of what’s in there. It’s hard reading about yourself doing the things I did.

people come and say, ‘I love the book, man, crazy stories’. I would prefer if they said, ‘Well done for being truthful, it must have been hard’. What we were doing was disgusting, those crazy stories are repulsive.”

“I kind of knew what was going on with Bassons and knew it was in my best interests not to talk to him. Looking back, it was wrong, same with Filippo Simeoni in 2004.”

playing field was level. “It’s not true, though. Drugs affect everyone differently, some react to them better than others. If you’ve not got that much money, that affects how much you can dope. It is a rich man’s game

“You know how I’ve still got every bit of memorabilia from my career, tons of stuff from the Tours and classics; bikes, jerseys, trophies, race numbers, everything. It fills an entire room. I don’t want any of it and have been thinking what to do with it. I’m going to auction it online and donate the proceeds to anti-doping. Do you think that would be okay?”

I liked the following:

I ask a question. “If no-one had doped, how many Tours would Armstrong have won?”

“Look what he did in his four Tours before his cancer. He never competed in the mountains. With no-one doping, he couldn’t have won seven. Maybe he could have won one. Maybe, I don’t know.”

“Will he tell the truth?”

“From the bottom of my heart, I hope he does. I really mean that. I wouldn’t wish the kind of suffering I’ve had, holding these secrets, getting accused of all this stuff, and just denying, denying, denying. I hope he comes clean because his life will improve if he does. I understand he could ask a hundred different lawyers and each one would say, ‘Don’t tell the truth because there could be serious financial consequences’. But I think it would be worth it. It’s his way to freedom.”

Thx for this link, I couldn't see the original piece either. Tyler hopes Lance would come clean bec it would be good for him. I'm not sure he would, bec Lance doesn't seem to be bothered by lies, but Tyler and many others are.

Armstrong does not have compassion. It is an emotion that he cannot identify with.

Also Armstrong does not suffer from guilt.

Never gonna happen. Armstrong will only admit doping if it serves his interests to do so.

Just finished it last night. Like others, I read it front to back in a single sitting. Even when you think you "know" most of that history, it still makes a huge impression taking in so much information at once, especially with the new revelations that crop up. A mixture of awe and revulsion...

When everyone is seen as either an enemy or a potential/future enemy, how could there be any feelings of guilt? It's the ultimate selfishness.

A quote from Mr. Hog on the Kimmage thread:

Let's not forget Lance opinion on the subject matter. This is the reason more people should donate:

Shouldn't Pat and Hein know Irish plumbers don't have that kind of money?

I have yet to read any comment from LA regarding Tyler's book, has anybody come across anything? I find it amazing that he cares to comment on 2 guys filing a defamation lawsuit against Paul Kimmage halfway across the planet but totally ignores a book recently printed proclaiming the truth of him being a fraud, liar, cheater, ***, etc...

Finished the book last night. Very well written, very balanced.

The Lance stuff is just what I expected, that is one sick MF...

i wouldn't appreciate lance for sure, but wouldn't curse him either, though it's very unpleasant to realize that lives (even not careers) of likes of mayo or possibly tyler himself were just lamed. i wonder if lance was the only dominator who could call uci on opponents. it's pretty doubtful. contador finishing with 7 raised fingers and stating that armstrong is his idol... they are hostages of this vicious system and have no way back. to my great regret, doping is common part of cycling culture and probably decades should pass that something could get the ball rolling. :(

Everyone defends its camp. Breshel sticks up for Riis. So much time and money was wasted under cover of anti-doping fight. And nothing changed.. Nothing... :)

Walsh put it best when he said that there those who are dragged into doping in order to survive, and then there those who drag others into doping, and that Armstrong was one of these.

You can't call someone who decided to push the doping envelope further than anyone else ever had done in order to dominate the Tour de France like no other rider in history a 'victim'...

Ultimately, the only true 'victims' were those riders who chose to remain clean and so never had the results their talent and hard work merited, or who were bullied out of the sport by people like Armstrong.

Having read the book, it would indeed be very hard to describe Armstrong as a victim. He never was and never will be a victim in this case.
