Just once a year I indulge at the MN State fair. Not as if it's my normal diet.;) Though walking around that place you'd think it was for most people. I guess the big difference between us/them is we ride bikes for entertainment, they play video games and watch 5 hours of tv a day.
5hrs of T.V. is on the conservative side, ask my couch potato wife.;)
I curse the day they came out with dvr cable boxes that can record upwards of 60 hrs of T.V.
I only command the box when the tour de anything is on,otherwise I'm riding it.

Recently met some kids that have never played a game of baseball but maintain 2 fantasy teams per kid. Have 2 or 3 video baseball games per child at @50 bucks per game. Kids mom told he is doing better in school now that he is not so tired from playing.11 year olds with 2 hours plus of home work? Some schools in the US say there is not time in the busy school day for free play or phys ed.

I looked again, still can't tell, will take your word. You guys probably know more about chocolate covered bacon than us California granola eaters do.
Now I just can't figure which is worse.:D

If you want real healthy eating you should attend a Belgium Cross race....yum

It is not just America that has this issue, Germany is now on par with the US for percentage of the population overweight.

I'll invite you to the NC state fair... Jumbo turkey legs (bigger than a heavy baby); corn dogs; deep fried-about-anything (last year's hit was pecan pie I believe...) and some attractions that made you hurl it all out again. :D

After seeing all the various foods, I only had a pretzel and managed not to choke on it.

The answer is never with the commercial interests, they are there to make money! The answer is with parents who rather see their kids in their rooms/ on the couch/ hanging around the corner store, than getting involved in minor sports. It does not matter which sport a kids is involved with, as long as they are involved in something. However a lot of parents can't be bothered to sign the kid(s) up, because THEY will have to be there/ drive them there/ maybe are asked to help fundraise, etc. Then: What's for lunch, What's for supper, What's in the fridge/ cupboard for snacks, etc. How many kids still walk to school? There is your fat problem. I hate to see what their kids are going to be like, although there maybe a total reversal as they get older.

Got any deep fried pickle nuggets? I'm there! :D I tell ya, it takes me about two weeks of riding to fully recover from just a couple outings at the Fair. Usually I just go for the free concerts.

Don't ever go to the "Classics" in Europe. Each race is part of a town/ county wide fair (kermis) where 99% of the food is deepfried, covered with whipped cream, or pure sugar in various stages. But oh man, does it all taste good! And then a (!) Grolsh, Stella Artois, or Oranjeboom to wash it all down....................

What about the use of Ritalin, Prozac, and other "BRAIN" drugs in the traditional "blue states"? Try that out?

I'll see your "Brain" drugs in blue states and raise methamphetamine and hillbilly heroin in red states.

Anyway, back to the op, kids were humiliated in the 70's and 80's if they were fat. We had Two Belly Petrocelli living at the end of the block. Two Belly for short.

Yup, we're f&cked! Fortunately for me, I have only three and a half to four decades left on my sentence. Then lights out. I'll continue saying my prayers, however.

A ramification from this is the alarming rate of diabetes increase in the country. We have 12% today, and that number is aggressively going up because of all the sugar, corn syrup and empty carbohydrates people eat, and how little they exercise.

Think about this for a moment, nearly one in eight people in the United States are diabetic. A very large number beyond that are pre-diabetic. At the rate we're going, diabetes could inflict over 50 million Americans by 2020, one in five people. This number is even more startling when one considers just how damaging diabetes is to the human body, and how expensive it is to treat over the lifetime of the individual.

Sadly, to me anyway, is just how much effort is underway to cure diabetes compared to how much effort there seems to be to prevent it in the first place. There seems to be this strange conservative backlash against anyone who dares utter a breath that any government agency attempt to do anything about preventing diabetes with dietary restrictions as being "socialism", even if it kills us in the process.

Watch the documentary"Super Size Me",produced by Morgan Spurlock<-(may not be spelled correctly)
He eats nothing but McDonalds for 30 days,3 meals a day.It almost killed him.
I believe his sugar intake was something like 30 pounds for the month.
At one point in the documentary,he actually pulled over and vomited out the window.

I personally thought that Spurlock was a bit of a wuss and inappropriate for the experiment. His girlfriend is a vegan chef. This is a guy who is not used all the grease, sugar, and low quality protein that the rest of us Americans call food.

Somehow I think the prude police stopped by, because when I went, I only found a barn filled with prize winning rabbits and other farm animals... The boobs you were referring to, I did see on the obese bodies of most of the male visitors. Very unappetizing.

Deep fried pickles drowned in ranch sauce... I am very well integrated, thank you ;)

There is a segment of American society that cries socialism every time someone proposes anything that might improve society.
too many reading Bentham.

What makes America great, is Reb Lodster. It is Michelin Star (three) cuisine. A public option is indeed socialism. Obama is a communist. I would only accept socialized Reb Lodster. A Reb Lodster in every hospital in N America.

The Cheddar Bay biscuits should be part of every school canteen, socialized school meals.

Since I'm not American, never been there etc., am I wrong in thinking that the word "socialism" is like an evil, dirty word?

All the "social" things we do like schools, fire, police, hospitals, road repair, parks are never considered bad. If you mention anything collective outside of what we do now most Americans do an automatic knee jerk "no". Socialism is off they table in any form in the US. The health care that everybody else has is considered "Socialist" by a huge % of the US population. The universal health care we provide for our military and public officials works well.

I've never heard of this Tracy Grimshaw. As per her pics on google, I dunno if it's a bad hair style, she's just plain unattractive, or both?
