The interesting thing is that last year he went 1 km/h faster in the ITT that was around 4kms longer.

Yes, with his wide shoulders Ganna also doesn't have the most aero position (compared to the other top tter), so more wind is probably not that ideal for him.

I think they look much stronger yes. Almeida had his face show pain even very early on the climb before they set a higher tempo. However Almeida has a tendency for comebacks so I wouldn't put it completely past him to claw back.
But I also wonder if he's simply not the best with shared leadership. That's the reason I watch this particular race; to see that interaction. Some riders do extremely well with that, while others seems to simply lose their motivation.
Other thing I wonder about was the Majka attack. Still don't understand why. It made the race enjoyable to watch thoug lol. (Enough of my ramblings now

I think Yates is actually the only one here capable of matching or even attacking Pogacar on a steeper climb, especially early on the season with no fatigue in legs (like at UAE). See results of previous editions. If Pog is even slightly below his best level then Yates' attack may succeed. Pog was pretty cautious in his interview mentioning that he could lose time on Saturday.
I watched the last couple of kilometers of the race. Nice win by Pogačar. Ganna must be in great form. Dumoulin couldn't keep up today and that is a shame. All in all the GC differences are still rather small and i feel that this race could still be open. As for UAE tactics. It was nice to watch but i feel the tactics were a bit naive.
No, I expect Pogacar to win the race since he is probably the best climber in the world, very consistent and is targeting this race. I do expect Yates to do what he can to drop Pogacar though, which he did manage to do two years ago, and there’s absolutely no question that Jabel Hafeet is a way better opportunity to do so than today’s climb. Jebel Jais has never created any meaningful gaps because it’s simply way too easy.
Pogacar is the best rider in the world. On paper nobody will be able to beat him in a stage race like this with the exception of maybe a topform Roglic.
However Yates and Vlasov are amazing riders and of course they will need to try in on Saturday, and who knows, maybe Pogacar has his first bad day in a while?

I just finished watching the stage. So Yates thought he could beat Pogacar at the sprint. LOL. If you want it you must risk a little bit more than that.

yeah, but if you crash during a recon of a TT course with 2 corners only, I guess it's the penalty you deserve
Lets be fair. This climb just isn’t suited for a longer range attack. Risking something he will very likely lead to losing time and the chance of gaining time is almost non-existent.
Both Yates and Vlasov will realize that Saturday is the day where it should happen. That is a climb where you can drop others. Still dropping Pogacar will be extremely difficult.
For me it wasn't really unexpected. He did win in 2020 with an over 20km @ 6% climb near the finish, even if from the breakaway. He did loose only 1:30 to flying Nairo on Lure. As for Giro winner... i'm slightly concerned it could go back to the Moser/Saronni days of TT & sprint-fests with barely any climbing (enough to only dislodge the likes of Maertens orKnudsen).

Again, they have cut both, mountains and TT, to try to be fair. It is not my decision. But I see why they are doing it. Of course, if you increase the ITT kms you will increase the hardness of the mountains. It is common sense. To try the balance the race between the climbers and TT'ers. However, it does not always happen like that, and most of the times it does not happen like that. History shows that the balance will always go in favor of the time trialers and for that reason the organizers have cut both. Indurain, Armstrong are good examples on how boring the Tours can be. And the organizers recognized it. I think I am repeating myself again. I think it is very clear.
Just finished watching the stage. Enjoyable to say the least. Despite not being the steepest climb didn’t expect to see Ganna ou there untill the finish, Dumoulin a long way to ride to reach his peak, the same with Almeida even realising he spent the last energy he had pushing in the last KM for Poga. As for Pogacar not at his Best but enough To win it. Really impressed with Vlasov and Powless, both seamed near top form for the beggining of the season.
