It's a huge shame that they haven't just copied the first four stages of the men's race. That circuit on stage 1 has potential to be interesting in this race, whereas it will just come down to an uphill sprint among the men.

We have a full start list now, and it's unsurprisingly a bit more stacked than we saw in Australia, with multiple riders riding their first races in new team colours. UAW will be wearing their special home jersey, and Fenix-Deceuninck will premiere their Rosso Namib kit this week.

SD Worx are lining up without a GC rider (on paper), so for them it'll be all about getting the Wiebes train to run smoothly in the desert. They'll face tough competition in the sprints from Balsamo, Consonni and Kool in particular.

Longo Borghini is the biggest favourite, but it's not guaranteed at all that she'll be celebrating her second overall victory at the end of the week. My major hope for the race is that Petra Stiasny will finally get to start Jebel Hafeet in the front group/peloton and finish in the top 10 (she was dropped in the wind in 2023 and last year she crashed just before the climb).

I fail to understand why Dygert is at this race as there is not much chance of her winning a stage, especially seeing she rode a full program in Australia. On the other hand, Woolaston should be at this race, however, she is stuck riding the NZ Championships. Which begs the question why would you organise a national championship against a WT race.

Grrrrrr: no it doesn't: it invites the question.. If you were to speculate on what events she might race in wearing the NZ champion's jersey, that would be begging the question (of whether she will win the NZ championship)

I don't think there are that many races at the same time as the Aussie Nat Champs... and I'm pretty sure that if the NZ Nat Champs was at the same time as the Aussie, then people doing the NZ would be able to get to Australia in time for TDU.

I don't think there are that many races at the same time as the Aussie Nat Champs... and I'm pretty sure that if the NZ Nat Champs was at the same time as the Aussie, then people doing the NZ would be able to get to Australia in time for TDU.

There were definitely a lot of Kiwi riders back home at the time of the Aussie NC, so that shouldn't have been a problem. I also know that Michaela Drummond travelled back to Europe before TDU, so she could have been riding the NC if it had been held earlier in the year.

Still FDJ have to keep all their riders happy, and since Wollaston wouldn't have been a (major) favourite in this field anyway, I'm not not too bothered by Guazzini getting the nod here.

Planned to watch a bit more women's cycling this season because I really enjoyed the races and especially how much Dutch women seemed to have mad beef with each other, turned on my first race and instantly there's a huge ass crash, cursed.

Who could have predicted a crash like this could happen on a long flat stage? Ok, it could have happened on the Liwa Palace stage as well, but there would at least have been some climbs and descents to stretch out the peloton and perhaps make people stay more alert.
