It would not be a surprise to anyone. Regardless of Van Vleuten's raid today. They still need to follow and/or burn a lot of matches in the chase.
No but we’ve seen quite a few large peloton self-harm moments this year and if van vleuten wins this as easily as she looks like she’s going to, then they might be just that bit more aware of chasing evenepoel and not repeating San Sebastián. And that will make/break the chance of a long range solo. Let’s be real here: Van Vleuten is way stronger than Remco in comparison to the rest of the pack. He wont be able to outride a whole group working well, he needs a *** up to have a chance

Don't they realize they have to work together if they want any chance to come back?
I think there's a bit of fear from some of the isolated riders that aren't Lizzie or to a lesser extent Chloe. Lizzie did the lion's share of the work during the phase when they were pegging Annemiek's gap, and that may well have dissuaded the likes of Uttrup Ludwig, Koppenburg and Spratt from collaborating, because they had three reasons not to:
  1. Anna VDB is getting a free ride
  2. Italy have the numbers so they should do the work
  3. Lizzie looked really strong and is the strongest sprinter in the group so if they wanted to beat her they needed to tire her first.

Chloe has the flat strength, but again Lizzie tried to close her down, quick counter attack by Anna VDB and Lizzie has had a bit of a moment! They've shed some of the less strong riders like Paladin and Cille. As I said earlier, because it broke down to small groups earlier, this suits Dygert and means your prediction has been borne out more than mine, whereas I think had the péloton stayed together longer, she would have been less of a factor because she openly says she doesn't like the positioning battling side of pack racing - in a small group, placement is less crucial and she's done a pretty smart break here.

Right, they've caught 30" on AVV, but now the others aren't going to trust Dygert because they know how strong she is so will want her to do the majority of the work.

Dygert is so strong. LIzzie has only has herself to blame for getting dropped by chasing her instead of making VDB do it. In fact, they all need to be doing that.

That's the thing though. That's just how you look at it. Evenepoel isn't a top favorite. The guys chasing him (if he decides to go from far) will be domestiques. While Van Vleuten was a red hot favorite, and the women chasing her are the other top favorites. I don't think she is stronger in comparison to the women that are chasing her, than Remco is compared to the guys that would chase him. If the likes of van der Poel, Trentin, Sagan... would start, then GVA and Gilbert get a free ride.

Dygert just rode van der Breggen right off her wheel when she'd been sitting on forever. So strong.

No but my point is that if van vleuten wins this, then the peloton will be a lot more aware and aggressive in chasing any solo by any strong roder, Evenepoel included

Well if the peloton just let Evenepoel take off just like that they're as dumb as a sack of bricks regardless of who wins today.

Can Dygert come back to van Vleuten??
You wouldn't think. I mean we're talking about the multiple time Workd TT champ but who knows with the form Dygert has and the extra time AVV has spent solo. This could turn out to be a great race after all.
