UCI to introduce new World Ranking

UCI is to introduce a new world ranking system next year. Continental tour races and national championchips are to count as well. Also, the rankings are going to work like the tennis world rankings, meaning that points gained will be held for 52 weeks before they'll drop. That way the ranking doesn't start over completely at the start of the year.

Seems like an ok move, though there's no way they'll find reasonable balance between the different stage races, stages, classics and top 10 places

Winning Paris-Roubaix is now equal to winning GP Québec? That is just messed up and wrong.

More pointless changes from the UCI

The ranking is a *** and hard to understand. But is it written somewhere what is this ranking for? Will it have some relevance or will be useless after the other rankings? I hope at least it is useful to make more logic qualification quotas for WCH's.

So we got a World Tour Ranking AND a World Ranking?!

The World Tour gives a kind of award at the end of the year, but the new one is just continuously. Better they introduce a World Ranking jersey, like in the old times. Otherwise it's just a CQ-ranking in UCI-format..

Yeah, they should have a World Ranking Jersey like they have in CX races!

One of the problems of World Tour and Continental rankings was that quotas for WCH's were calculated in mid August, then the end of the season was always irrelevant for this qualification. Furthermore the continental circuits and world tour quotas produced absurd outputs and irreal representations in Worlds according to nations potential. This World Ranking, even being wrongly defined, will solve these problems. But only if they use it for it. Because they are able to keep the continental quotas... Either way, one or another ranking will be anecdotic if not completely useless

We haven't really kept abreast of this new ranking system so here goes. Jason Christie led for a week after winning the NZ nationals. Then Gerrans took over and has remained in post after the TDU.

Now into the ninth week, after Strade Bianche, Cancellara moves up a lot of places, and Ulissi, also leading most top 10s without a win, is in second after placing well in a load of early season Italian races. The top 10 will look a lot different after P-N and T-A obviously.

1 (1) Simon GERRANS 755
2 (3) Diego ULISSI 515
3 (4) Petr VAKOC 495
4 (2) Richie PORTE 485
5 (31) Fabian CANCELLARA 439
6 (9) Greg VAN AVERMAET 425
7 (5) Sergio Luis HENAO MONTOYA 405
8 (6) Alexander KRISTOFF 400
9 (7) Jay MCCARTHY 390
10 (8) Arthur VICHOT 365

Edit:

Gerrans also leads the World Tour rankings. Vakoc leads the Europe Tour, Okubamariam the Africa Tour, (D) Quintana the America Tour, Cheung the Asia Tour, and Kennaugh has won the Oceania Tour.

I like the idea of the world ranking but it won't become relevant until it's been around for awhile, seeing as it's a rolling year ranking (like CQ) that won't really start until it's been in place for 12 months. Once it's been around a year, they should really include a jersey to give it more significance.

That would be a penalization to the team of the best rider in the world. :D

Why did they not start with 12 months worth of points instead of starting from 0? Right now the ranking doesn't mean very much til August or so.

Because they'd have to retroactively calculate a whole season of racing.
Doable, certainly - but very time-consuming.

My guess is that the UCI didn't want to pay InfoStrada Sports (the company that does the rankings) extra to re-calculate all ranking points for 2015.

Is 25th place in 1.1 race really worth more than 4th on a TdF stage?

4th on a TdF stage is worth 15 points, any placing between 16th and 15th on a 1.1 is worth 3 points, so no.

Should have been part of the initial contract. Can't take that much time considering they'd have access to proper UCI database of results instead of screen scrapes etc. How many people are involved in CQ Ranking? I doubt it's a dedicated team working round the clock somehow.

Ok. I read somewhere that only top3 on stages will get points so I was mistaken.

It's top 5 for grand tour stages.
