I like the idea of the world ranking but it won't become relevant until it's been around for awhile, seeing as it's a rolling year ranking (like CQ) that won't really start until it's been in place for 12 months. Once it's been around a year, they should really include a jersey to give it more significance.

Why did they not start with 12 months worth of points instead of starting from 0? Right now the ranking doesn't mean very much til August or so.
Because they'd have to retroactively calculate a whole season of racing.
Doable, certainly - but very time-consuming.

My guess is that the UCI didn't want to pay InfoStrada Sports (the company that does the rankings) extra to re-calculate all ranking points for 2015.

Should have been part of the initial contract. Can't take that much time considering they'd have access to proper UCI database of results instead of screen scrapes etc. How many people are involved in CQ Ranking? I doubt it's a dedicated team working round the clock somehow.
I do agree that it should have been part of the contract. It's only writing a new calculation program, then feeding it all the results and wait for it to do the calculations (no, Sean Kelly, get off me).

But when the UCI signed the initial contract, they didn't have any plans to introduce the new ranking - so any retroactive calculations of such a rolling ranking weren't included.

Yes, they were settled at the end of last season in a system that still bewilders me in its arcane and Byzantine aspects. I believe GB qualified the maximum 5.

According to PCS that's the UCI World Ranking. The UCI World Tour is:

1st Peter Sagan
2nd Alberto Contador
3rd Richie Porte
4th Sergio Luis Henao
5th Sep Vanmarcke
6th Nairo Quintana
7th Fabian Cancellara
8th Greg Van Avermaet
9th Arnaud Démare
10th Ian Stannard
11th Simon Gerrans
12th Thibaut Pinot
13th Alexander Kristoff
14th Geraint Thomas
15th Michal Kwiatkowski
16th Mathew Hayman
17th Ilnur Zakarin
18th Ben Swift
19th Jurgen Roelandts
20th Tom Boonen

Ah thanks!

In the spirit of random Sky team fantasising, I give you Team GB:

-Stannard, Thwaites and Rowe as the tough rouleurs who could create echelons or chase them down, and perhaps give GB attacking options if the race doesn't come down to a sprint. Alternatively, Dowsett
-Cummings as the 2km to go attacker. But probably just as another rouleur.
-Thomas to repeat his 2011 role
-Wiggins as the powerhouse of old giving it one last pull on the front. Assuming he can qualify...?
-Pick any of Doull, McLay, Fenn, Blythe and Swift for the actual leadout.
-Cavendish.

GB obviously have some good riders on the flat, but I fear the lack of a quality last leadout man will result in another instance of Cavendish starting the sprint on Kittel's wheel and covering more ground than him but ultimately losing by half a wheel. If GB specifically drilled Stannard, Thomas and Rowe to lead out rather than simply get Cavendish on Kittel's wheel, I'd say he'd have a great chance.

He doesn't have to qualify. The national team can select any rider they want for the Worlds, provided he's male and an elite rider (so at least 18 years old).
