Das ist gut!

Always a good guy, Jan. This was one of Jan's more memorable years for me. If not for some slick roads in the final ITT that year, he might have dethroned LA. But it was a good fight nonetheless.

Found a funny episode about that TT when I found a docu about der Jan produced by "canvas" around one year ago. Must be still around there on cyclingtorrent.
IIRC I got it from there.
Anyway, I watched it last week again and there was talk about that wet 2003 TT. What I didn't notice when looking it for the first time was a funny comment by Jan. lmao for 30 minutes. You actually have to see it.

Ulle said something like that about TT preparation - totally cool and serious:
"Das war doch nur geradeaus und ein paar Kreisverkehre. Dafür fahr ich doch nicht draussen im Regen rum"
"It was just straight on and a few roundabouts. Actually I don't ride around in the rain for that."

Ok, I think he is somehow right about that, but why not just do it ? :)
Like everyone knows, he let Rudy record that course by car and rode the TT on the rollers, warm and dry.
In the docu then follows Hanegraaf and said that they saw Armstrong out there and didn't really wonder about that etc....
Personally, I think that Ulle didn't lose le Tour because of that slide. That edition was lost before the final TT, and even in dry and warm weather it was nearly impossible to win that TdF. Perhaps a win would have been possible in that epic TT, but Lance became stronger at the end, too, and had the advantage of starting behind Jan.

If we can believe Jan, that Tour was lost because of a (bad) infusion (of whatever :( ), containing some "proteins" causing an allergic shock in his body. He slowly recovered in the following days.
He was close before a DNF and serious bad condition, but wanted to pull through, even when was really crazy.
During one flat stage, he was pushed and pulled by teammates and peloton, just to survive. If the road had gone up, or too much tempo, he would have been out.
Ok, not much new info here, but great to see den Jan telling it.
Just look the docu if you are interested.
Not much new stuff in it, but interesting anyway.

He should have attacked in Ax3 way earlier. He should have tried to go with Vino and Mayo on the Peyresourde. That's were he lost the Tour in my opinion. (Apart of the illness)

wait what?

In cycling during 1999-2005, there was one rider, shining like a comet in the High Alps, Mr. Lance Armstrong, reaching deep into his pocketful of courage.
Ullrich, although uber talented and having great support, like Rolf Aldag and Kloden, just did not have it. Still, Ullrich should have beaten Lance in half the tours they battled in. Very strange, Jan?

Jan rides the 238 kilometre Ötztaler Cycling Marathon in support of former slalom world champion Frank Wörndl and it sounds like he enjoyed it!

“At the beginning of Jaufenpass Frank noticed that it was really difficult for him, the descents were cold, and so were the drinks - they really upset his stomach. He told me to go ride ahead - the very generous captain who can lets his helper go on, if he [the leader] has a bad day ...

“So I could then still be flying a bit, especially on the downhills. The Ötztal is really a beautiful race. But a crazy affair: nearly 240 kilometers, 5500 meters - that's huge. Chapeau to the recreational riders. The last in the field are more than twelve hours in the saddle.”

“What I will really remember from Ötztal are the faces of the riders on top of Timmelsjoch: Completely dead after 30 km ascent, but totally happy. That's cycling. And it is really fun again, this feeling I have long missed,” he wrote.

“I'm looking forward to my next race - the "Charity Bike Cup" on 3 October,” he said. “Let's see what happens next year. Maybe a few meters of altitude less than the Ötztal, but again with pleasure. Because I want to convey above all that road cycling is a pleasure.”

The 37 year old added that he wanted to spend time with young people in the sport, and also to continue raising money for charity.

The CAS decision should be any day now. Jan's manager inferred yesterday that regardless the decision he would likely tell all shortly.

He is not coming back

I would love that so much, but it's not going to happen.

It'll be related to the CAS decision - something to do with doping.

He won't be telling "all" it will be a Basso/Riss styled admission. I doped alone and only during the prepartion for the 2006 Tour - seeing that I was removed from the race I didn't actually get to the dope.

Thats about all we'll get.

Agreed he's not coming back.

People in the Middle East are paying him more than he'll ever get as a cyclist.
