TJVG won the pan-flat ITT at the Tour of Utah, he's my pick for this prologue.
He's also a pretty good descender (certainly in TTs). Definitely the favourite.

I've edited my signature to include a direct link to Tour Tracker, or Shack Tracker as it is being called for this race. Start times vary from 1000hrs to 1315hrs MDT - 1600hrs to 1915hrs GMT.

You will note that at the bottom of the official maps are general stat for that stage, including the start, and estimated finishing time. Unless someone beats me to it, or really wants to do the stage preview, I'll be posting stage specific threads for the next stage after the conclusion of the current stage. The profiles and maps I will be using are higher resolution that those available on CN's pages - the text of CN's images is not as legible.

To throw out another name, another Yank named George Hincapie may also show well here. His weight will favor him on this track, and he did finish 10th earlier in the month on the flat ToUtah ITT.

Looking at the profiles again, it's a shame there aren't any genuinely decisive looking climbs at the ends of stages, and nothing very steep at all.

Presumably will be a bit of a walkover for TJVG & Levi, not much hope for our Colombian friends.

Thanks, Ben, for starting this thread. :)

As happens often, there is vertical exaggeration to the profiles, so it is flatter than it appears, especially the last long section. It's just a slight downhill after getting out of Garden of the Gods.

I agree, most of it is just 2-3% downhill and the steepest section finishes at a sharp corner so they are to slow right down to get around the corner. It will be quick but not super super quick.

This is a joke. You may as well get some differently sized rocks and roll them down the course and see who wins

don't worry about gobernacion,in that little bit-uphill time trial, just like ryo would say, henao will put minutes in his rivals.now seriously i really think the colombian teams will put 5 guys in the top ten and henao will win this ahead of levi.van garderen won't stand a chance, tom danielson on the other hand,he will.
from the big guns, just evans will fight i think,i don't expect anything from the others.

The Colombians aren't afraid to light it up at 50 k from the finish line, and if they get someone like Leipheimer with them there's not much hope for Tejay, who has made great progress in the time trial but not so much on the climbs.

What I find most promising for this race is the energy that the two Colombian teams bring. They will definitely animate the race. There are several Yanks aside from Levi who should show well. And dont discard Andy Schleck - He has been based here in Steamboat for the past week, I'm sure doing some of the high altitude climbs of the route.

Andy won't win, he cannot even beat the 12 year old, how is he supposed to beat a 40 year old like Levi.

Of course at a start time of 1:15pm MDT, the lighting on the start won't be that dramatic. This is the official profile of this short ITT:

and a profile showing the rounded off gradients:

Too all the mods that locked our down hill TT thread! In yo face!

As others have pointed out, this isn't the first time this has been done.

And as still others have pointed out, this downhill isn't, apparently, all that steep - which is too bad. I love the idea of a really fast, steep, but technical downhill time trial. Why not? It wouldn't necessarily have to be inordinately dangerous. (In a downhill featuring long, steep drops with sweeping turns, intermittent technical bits could serve as "speed bumps.")

Anyway, I'm glad to see the race organizers are trying to break out of the mold. I'm looking forward to this race. I hope the extreme altitude won't put a damper on it.
