I think Nibali's attack today was pretty strong. He tried and tried again along the descent that followed, but was not able to get a gap.

Attacking on the Selvino descent would have been simply moronic.
Risking his Giro for what? Gaining 15 secs if everything went perfectly well, being caught on the last 10km more probably, after having wasted a huge amount of energy for nothing?

It was pretty dissapointing racing on two categorized climbs.
If the first climb would be raced hard after brutal pace whole day peloton would explode and there could be easily 30+ seconds between little groups.

I've seen the interview today, he looked quite resigned... :(
Or maybe he was just downplaying his chances to relieve the pressure.

Probably his form is not where he was expecting it to be.
I think yesterday result was a big blow for him. More psychologically than for the results itself.
Apparently he took it really badly.

Unfortunately his form seems not improving as expected. I don't see a way how he would be anywhere close to Quintana in the finish of next stage.

Gazzetta videos, I guess they are geo restricted though.
Nah that is the problem, he say he has the form, but it's just that the other riders are stronger.
Never seen him like that, usually he's angry when things are not going his way, now he looked really disgruntled.
Well. we'll see, I don't think the situation is so bad actually.

I think he knows he's in good shape but the other GC contenders just better this time around, so there isn't really much he can do. Yesterday it wasn't such a bad performance overall, but the other top guys went up really really fast.
I remember seeing an interview after the ITT and albeit being satisfied with his performance he already seemed a bit like he thought Domoulin already won unless he messed up.
Nibs confirmed this again in today's interview and he is right I guess; even if they miracolously get back 4-5mins before the last ITT it is still likely that Domoulin wins.

Nibali also seems a bit annoyed at some of the press that expect him to pull this one off somehow.

I have seen it, thanks. He was talking only about Dumoulin, no Quintana. I think he (and Quintana but he hides it better) were shocked by Dumo's performance on Oropa. It was a bit funny/sad when he said "If he wins in Milano I will shake his hand, I can't do anything else, guys."

Usually when he's down he finds an extra motivation. I still believe.

Re: Nibali discussion thread

Nibali was down and out last year as well, but he still tried and then Kruijswijk crashed and Chaves faded and he won the Giro. I mean sometimes we all need some luck, but if Kruijswijk didnt crash last year he almost certainky wouldnt have won the giro.

It's not over yet for Nibali. The gap is smaller than last year if I'm not mistaken and last yearKruijswijk was the best climber so there was even less perspective imo.

I still find it very likely for Dumoulin to lose minutes in the upcoming days. Looks what's ahead this week, people will lose minutes easily on a single day.
It's most likely Quintana will profit most from this, but after quintana I still give Nibs a very good shot.

I actually thought he was okay after Etna and the TT where he suprised me so he's form must be good. But saturday he blow himself up so hard. I knew it was not his kind of climb but okay he losed more time then I expected. He needs a stage with more climbs like tomorrow. I really hope he can still show something en save his podium spot.

On Saturday he remembered me a bit of the Nibali that we saw in the 2013 Vuelta when he also struggled on some of the uphill finishes.

Press conference today. Few things: he suffered on one climb stages, has an important negative time gap but it is not over yet. He is not interested in second, third or fourth. Mentally he is ready, last year he had worse sensations, now he is better but the level is much higher than last year. The tactic is important but you need to have cold blood and courage. The terrain is there tomorrow.

Read the report from today's press conference and I don't know why he's taking to the heart the criticism? It's exactly how he said, and sincere cycling fans know it without reminding.
I guess the home GT attracts wider spectrum of sport fans.

The real dark horse. I think he looks better than he did last year at least.

He just has TD and NQ in better form... so far.

Pellizotti has really turned back the years, he's been really good. Siutsou has been poor, considering he should be a top 20 rider.

Pellizotti is Nibali's roommate here, last year it was Michele, maybe he'll be providential. Hopefully Sivtsov will step up when needed.

Hopefully he can pace himself better like on the Agnello last year, and not try to hang on as long as possible and then blow spectacularly.

Vai Lo Squalo dello Stretto di Messina!
Awesome win by The Shark of Messina! But can he win the Giro against Dumo and Quintana? Don't think so. But I didn't expect Nibali to win today either. So Vai Vincenzo!

I believed from day one. First shark bite in this Giro was truly beautiful today, another unforgettable moment for us. He will take Dumoulin and Quintana for one hell of ride this week.

It's amazing how Nibali gets written off and rebounds. He's such a skillful racer, but smart with it as well. Doesn't just go in for the long range showy attacks, but plays to his strengths and rides himself back into contention.
