Controversy erupts as Evenepoel and Pogacar take jab at Roglic: "You shouldn't be afraid of him"

"Evenepoel seemed to make a good move in the general classification on Wednesday, finishing just 25 seconds behind Jonas Vingegaard and Pogacar and gaining another half a minute on Roglic. Roglic had slipped and fell in the last kilometer, but the jury applied the three-kilometer rule, giving him the same time.
"Those rules are part of racing, no problem," Evenepoel told Sporza. However, behind the podium, he showed more emotion when talking to Pogacar. "It was half a minute, that's quite a lot," we hear him say in recorded footage. Pogacar then leans in and whispers to his friend. "You shouldn't be afraid of him," said the yellow jersey wearer"

This is how pogacar is "respectfull" for his rivals. He also talked not nice things from WVA.

He pretends to be someone who he really isn't in terms of sportmanship and being a example.

Pogi comment on Roglic to Evenepoel is not about what he thinks of Roglic and only about helping Remco feeling better. The proof is when he said this comment it was only addressed to Remco and he didnt think anyone else would hear.

Basically if Remco wins the Tour then he becomes Jesus.

Segregation.
The OP for you to look back on and see why Evenepoel won’t be added to the title and it’s not due to segregation.

In the whole long history of the Tour, it has only happened twice that two riders have occupied the first two spots in two editions on GC but in different order. In 1985/86 with Hinault and Lemond, and in 2021/22 with Vingegaard and Pogačar.

It has only happened twice that two riders have shared the top two three times. Armstrong/Ullrich and Hinault/Zoetemelk but in both cases, the same rider won all three.

No matter how this Tour ends (as long as they don't have an accident), it will be the first time ever that the top two consists of the same two riders three years in a row, and should Pogačar manage to flip the tables and sandwich Vingegaard on the honours list it would be completely unprecedented.

In other words, we have an absolutely epic duel on our hands and I thought it might deserve its own thread (I at least don't think there is one) now that much lesser duels like Remco/Roglič - who only by schedule coincidence have crossed paths a few times - have one.

This is like peak Armstrong/Ullrich except that it's much closer and you actually have the feeling it can go either way without anyone being unlucky.

I don't know exactly what I want with this thread. It's obvious that they are different riders and that Pogačar is much more than a GC rider while Vingegaard is not, but that doesn't take away from their July battles.

May the best rider win.

Four consecutive 1-2 places in the Tour symbolizes this rivalry. No pair of cyclists have ever achieved it even in a non-consecutive way (Coppi-Bartali achieved four 1-2 doubles in total across two different GTs). Can they make it 5 in a row? It's likely but obviously in cycling bad luck can strike at any time: this seems the biggest threat to the streak continuation.

I think Ullrich and Armstrong were close to this, as well. Although technically speaking they dont match this exact number, due to Ullrich being out in 2002 and getting third in 2005.

All this Pogacar hate is honestly moronic.

I want Vingegaard to win the Tour - obviously - but I also recognise that Pogacar is an awesome dude, whom every cycling fan secretly wish was from their country ;)
Pogacar hate? Just a conservative estimate but I think a popularity poll among the general public would result in 90% for Pogacar vs. 10% for Vingegaard :)

Maybe not in Denmark though.

Ouch. That’s harsh.

It's not even true, Rogla has other GT podium positions and beyond, on top of 5 GT wins. Anyway, the whole point i was trying to make is it's time we end this segregation, upcoming Dauphiné and the Tour just perfect for that. Hence lets do that first now and it will likely come naturally anyway, for other names to pop up in this this thread. We'll see.

How the Cyclingnews board will be watching the duel every mountain stage in this year's TdF

Duel means two.

We'll see if it will really be a duel, starting Dauphiné. or if instead the two separated threads will need to get merged, to end the segregation.

Was Roglic runner up three times in 2023 now at four, and likely scenario five times in a row with either Pogacar or Vingegaard?

During mentioned years Rogla was much more consistent at the Tour, no such fluctuations involved. Anyway guys, enjoy this bubble while it lasts.

Moderation:
This thread is fine, it’s about two Tour winners who have battled back and forth over the years. It’s an obvious and prominent rivalry. There is also a big 6 thread. There is a Dauphine thread, and then here will be a Tour thread.

If that isn’t enough and you have thread suggestions or questions, please DM rather than discussing it here. Thank you!
