Since he lost 17 minutes today, there's a chance he has something left in the tank.

Well he crashed before the climb today but it wasn't severe, so probably he has something left, yes.

Look out for Szmyd tomorrow.

He is in form, the stage suits him, and he has no one to work for, in fact he is for sure the best Liqui chance for the GC. He has written on his website that, has big expectations for tomorrow stage. He will finish it in a very good place. Mark my words

yeah i agree with you
before race started i bet 5€ on in for GC, it was all my money on that website :(
with 81 odds, i feel pretty good about it, it sucks that i can't bet more on him :p

Sylwester Szmyd wins tommorow and wins GC!

I am not so optimistic abiut him winning the GC. Not because of tomorrow, but because he is a poor descender, and not a great rider on short climbs(although Mende stage despite starting the climb from the back of the group was very good). He may have some problems on the latter easier stages. Tomoorow he will be very strong, but do not know if able to win. Good luck with your bet :)

unfortunately you can't bet on stages in this race in betfair. after seeing quintana today he will win for sure tomorrow. he's also not dangerous for gc anymore

If you've seen the win, you know why he doesn't win that much ;)
Ah yes, Valverde doing trackstands to wait for him, could have cost him the GC if the finish on Madeleine had been a bit higher up, but he was true to his word. Good times.

Nah, Nieve has no interest in a stage like tomorrow's. Far too easy.

Man that's a tough parcours with ≈ 4km ascent. Didn't see who looked good today but Nieve (from the break) or Samu or Bottle FTW. I'll be interested to see how Van den Broeck goes. Is this his first race of the year?

VDB has done Algarve but then went into training camp for 4 weeks, ended well in the first group today and is curious about tomorrow will use that stage as a sort of test to see at what level he is...

Going to miss the end of this stage:(

Garmin have 4 guys on the same time so I think they might be major players as this is their home race and Dan Martin seems particularly motivated for this race.

I think someone from Dekker_Tomas list wont be far off. So...Dan Martin then.

Albasini should hang onto the lead tomorrow. Are there any other realistic chances of him losing time in the other stages?
He was already dropped today, but returned on the descent. Meaning he was one of the worst among the group of 30. Not to mention that tomorrow's climbs will be significantly harder and longer (if they're not canceled because of snow).

Ah right, didn't see that.

As for Szmyd, I saw him barely hanging on to the lead group on the final climb today so I'd be amazed if he won tomorrow.

It was not a problem of beeing week uphill. Sylwester is in very good form, but he is a very one dimnension rider, only climbs. Ha always has problems on the flat to get a good position in the group when the speed is high. Also shorter climbs does not suit him. Today he started the climb way back the field and must have passed a lot of riders to finish in the first group. Same story was in Mende, when he was eight, starting the climb from the back. Also the only goal for Szmyd for today was not to lose time, he is too slow, and a poor descender, so no way for him to win a stage like that, or gain some time. Tomorrow it is another story, a lot of climbing, not so fast as todayon the flatter parts, smaller group. It suits him much better. Also the Liquigas guys should help him, as he is their only chance for a good result, with Basso beeing awful as usual. Szmyd will be strong tomorrow, he is a very good climber, but rarely has a chance to ride for himself. He is in form and will be motivated tomorrow, who knows it maybe his last chance of hte season to ride for himself, when in form and on a well suited stage

If Albasini cracks and a small group contests the finish but they all finish same time, are we looking at number of stage wins to decide the GC ? No time bonuses and the remaining stages look unlikely to cause any gaps

It's the sum of stage places I think so a second and third trumps a win and fifth.

Although I could be wrong and I didn't find the rulebook on the Volta page when I searched 2 days ago.

Yes now I look at the current GC I think you're right

Hesdejal is currently 2nd on account of stage placings 35th and 5th

Whereas if it was highest placing(s) it would be Cataldo on account of his 2nd place today

Wonder if he and others will regret rolling in down the field on Stage 1
