Volta a Portugal 2022 (August 4-15)

So, no surprises: Glassdrive obliterated the field. Fernandes was the only one who could follow them but he's a non factor on the ITT. Even worse than Figueiredo, but may be one his way to podium. Efapel (the new one) absolutely non existant, Ace didn't call his old buddies...

Foreign teams were crushed obviously. Kudos for Murguialday who may hope to hang on to a top10.

This is the biggest gap at Torre between 1st and 10th since I can remember surpassing the 2000 massacre by Gamito and the 2011 Tavira show with B Sample Cardoso and Mestre (a Porco guy who's currently suspended).

EDIT - Found it: in 2008 it was bigger when Horner Sousa won but, if I'm remembering correctly, he was already out of contention from GC.

But they can climb form Unhais da Serra and there's a segment of gravel for 2 kms, but not climbing, even in small descent, but with so many rocks it will make diffrences. Apart form tahtc gravel section, the climb is hard as hell, and ther tarmac...well i wouldn't call it tarmac.

I hope we see Figueiredo attack on the observatorio de Vila Nova climb on stage 5, that one is perfect for him (he's a specialist for the steep gradients after all). I actually kinda like him since the Tavira days, so I'm kinda biased.

Freddy Watts is one of the few at Tugão who actually has a career that makes sense. However, his numbers, like everyone else, do not. At the end of the day he's just a good climber in a third rate team doing WT watts...

I think he'll try to attack and go for the stage on the new climb. GC is done so they can mess around a bit, specially being so far above everyone else.

Yeah, I agree on all points with you.

Sousa actually was in the break that day and won from it, but even if you take the gaps from Blanco in 2nd down to Cândido Barbosa in 11th (hmmm, yes, that makes it less shady, of course!!!) it was over four minutes ignoring the escapee. Sousa actually took the camisola amarela that day and held it for most of the race, but wasn't really taken seriously as a GC threat when Liberty Seguros also had Héctor Guerra, Nuno Ribeiro and Koldo Gil, and it was a few years before Sousa's late career renaissance when he suddenly became GC-capable again, he got dropped by his own teammates to Monte Assunção and then lost three and a half minutes to Blanco (four and a half to Cobo, but he was no GC threat so got allowed up the road unmarked) on Senhora da Graça and a bunch more in the ITT on the last day. Rui ended up seventh, but inherited sixth from Koldo Gil being DQed later. In 2009 he was a domestique again, in 2010 he made the top 10 largely from being in the group that got allowed time on Campanhó so was still in the GC mix after Senhora da Graça (same as Brôco). He had his initial spell of contention in the original Milaneza-Maia era in 2001-3, but then he's kind of an afterthought for a while, either getting the edges of the top 10 for teams without a frontline leader or is working in service of a better leader, and it's only from 2011 that his GC Indian summer begins really.

So I decided it was worth keeping a classification for riders on estrangeiro teams for a laugh. Think of it as being like a stage race version of Bordeaux-Paris, a sort of semi-motorpaced stage race since many of these guys will have been towed up all or part of climbs by dernies riders on Portuguese domestic teams. It looks like being a head to head battle for supremacy between the Basque Country and the United Kingdom.

1 Jokin Murguialday (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) ESP
2 Unai Cuadrado (Euskaltel-Euskadi) ESP +1'30
3 Txomin Juaristi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) ESP +3'10
4 Lukas Nerurkar (Trinity Racing) GBR +3'48
5 Yesid Pira (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) COL +3'49
6 Adrià Moreno (Burgos-BH) ESP +3'51
7 Xabier Isasa (Euskaltel-Euskadi) ESP +4'58
8 Calum Johnston (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) GBR +5'06
9 Íñigo González (BAI-Sicasal-Petrol de Luanda) ESP +6'09
10 Roberto Carlos González (Java-Kiwi Atlántico) PAN +6'47

Thomas Armstrong and Victor Langelotti are lurking a minute off the top ten however, and derny-paced breakaway opportunities could help some climb well up the charts in time.
