Volta a Portugal 2022 (August 4-15)

Another win-in-category for 33yo ex-doper with few previous results to speak of Barry Miller, who is getting into the spirit of the Volta the best of anybody in the Não-Tugão classification but lost too much on Torre to overcome his deficit to the actually young and promising riders. Nice to see a first performance that seems representative from Keegan Swirbul as well, aka the acceptable face of American ex-XC skiers on bikes. The two Britons who have been going really well in this, Thomas Armstrong and Calum Johnston, both lost a lot of time today. I think Murguialday has done enough to win the faux jersey now, but there's some close time gaps at the bottom of the top 10, with Fagundez and Swirbul also in striking distance ahead of tomorrow's TT.

Stage classification:
1 Barry Miller (BAI-Sicasal-Petro de Luanda) USA 4'43'34
2 Jokin Murguialday (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) ESP +8"
3 Txomin Juaristi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) ESP +13"
4 Keegan Swirbul (Human Powered Health) USA +19"
5 Adrià Moreno (Burgos-BH) ESP +1'20

Toni Carvalho has just demolished the intermediate point, 30s faster than De Mateos in 11km.

Only Moreira can beat him on the day. EDIT - And he does just that: 17s faster. Moreira will take the stage and yellow.

I think Murguialday is tied with Del Pino for 8th.

Old man Marque just squeezes past Juaristi to take a commanding lead in the prestigious "best rider not riding for Glassdrive" classification on the day. Melcior Mauri beat Big Mig thanks to his ITT, so his winning today was as inevitable as we all thought.

Which just begs the question - which is lower, the level of awareness Pereira credits the audience with in expecting them to believe that Figueiredo decided of his own volition despite his DS to make sure he didn't drop Moreira yesterday and condemned himself to inevitable defeat, or the level of awareness Frederico would need to have if it were to actually be true?

Figueiredo actually does an amazing time trial, 7th on the day. Only lost "1m15s" to Motor Moreira.
He did what he could and this kind of a technical TT with multiple short climbs suits him a lot more than a normal flat one of the same length.
In the end Mauri was crazy strong in the TT, so dropping him probably wouldn't have mattered. Carvalho actually could have won the whole race if it wasn't for his bad day on Torre.

Sheer dominance from Euskaltel-Euskadi in the time trial on the last day.

That sentence really does not compute.

However, this incredible display from Txomin Juaristi this week, attacking on cobbles, time trialling well and just by and large doing all the things that you would never believe of a Euskaltel rider in times of old, was not enough to wrest the final crown away from Caja Rural stagiare Jokin Murguialday, who takes the final Não-Tugão title. Barry Miller is a more traditional Volta a Portugal type rider than Yesid Pira, the latter being a decade younger and without a doping suspension in his past, but crucially, Pira's ITT is pretty woeful whereas Miller's was passable, which means the American sneaks past his Colombian rival to take the GC podium at the last. Roberto Carlos González, the Panamanian on Java-Kiwi Atlántico, drops out of the top 10 after hanging on for grim death for several days.

1 Txomin Juaristi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) ESP 26'15
