I assume the first riders can’t really go much faster. Can they?

When? These days or when the real game is on, like the Giro?
If they aren’t in peak form here, that’s worrying for the others.

I was asking myself the same. MAL and Bernal are supersonic with some six weeks before the hard part of the Giro begins.

Fresh years requires wins, so you don't prepare just for big GCs.
Yeah, you might pay it a bit when it matters later on.
Or there are riders that can go strong all year long, who knows.
All in all, I think Giro will be between the riders that have taken the very slow approach, Dumo and Nibbles.

Also, the Vuelta a Colombia was the most aggressively ridden race with top climbers for years, and all the protagonists were Colombians.

*Tour Colombia.

The Vuelta a Colombia WAS a 2.2 America Tour race now, and it's raced in August/September, I think.
Fixed for you
The stupids at FCC stopped registering the race for UCI continental tour

Kelderman isn't as talented as Gesink was back in the day (at least not climbing-wise) but he sure is as prone to crashes, if not more. It can't possibly be purely bad luck anymore, it has to be subpar bike-handling skills.
