MACHADO HAS THIS IN THE BAG

40 seconds for
Ruben PEREZ MORENO (075), Pablo LASTRAS GARCIA (005), Richie PORTE (185), Simon GESCHKE (197), Kevin SEELDRAEYERS (036), Antonio PIEDRA PEREZ (059), Vicente REYNES MIMO (137). Sergey LAGUTIN (213), Bruno PIRES (207), David DE LA FUENTE RASILLA (056), Markel IRIZAR ARANBURU (176), Andrey KASHECHKIN (035), Thomas PETERSON (098), Tiago MACHADO (177), Daniel TEKLEHAYMANOT (158), Lloyd MONDORY (015), Benoît VAUGRENARD (089), Kristof VANDEWALLE (149) y Denis MENCHOV (106).

Could this be the day where Machado strikes from his promising 41th on the road. Gaining a promising 40 minutes to the likes of Contador, Purito, Froome and Valverde and finally getting himself in order for contention in the very last moment of battle for himself and his dedicated fans? U just wait and see.

Lol at Menchov. What a laughing stock he has become.

So all of the top 4 have a teammate up the road, im guessing lampre and BMC are working to put a man in the break too. Break will win this if all major teams represented

Covadonga looks steeper on the profile than on TV...heck even Jalabert was able to do well there in the past !

From a break. The year he won a gazillion stages. The year before he was 4th at the Tour and won the Vuelta.

He also won in 1996 and was very important for Zülle in 1997.

Yeah but by then it wasn't a surprise anymore. He was one of the strongest in the peloton at the time, it hardly says anything about the climb itself.

It's 2 weeks after the vuelta, that's a big difference.

Vuelta finishes the 9th and the worlds tt is the 16th IIRC

Edit: 10 days vae is right, I was looking at the ttt date

10 days I think

Well the ITT is, the road is 2 weeks.

But my point is that now the WC has moved up a week. A few years ago it was directly after the vuelta.

True. But I would also say that it would have suited him quite wll. No difficult terrain close by apart from Fito and a low finish altitude. My recollection from 1997 is that he looked a lot stronger there than on the previous days (Morredero?, I think).

Transplant the climb to the middle of the Alps and set it 1000 meters higher and he wouldn't have done so well.

He's only gonna help his team mates in the rr, the route suits the others much better + he probably won't be good enough to win anyway
