Well that's what it was supposed to be. Maybe Carapaz decided he was going to help whoever was stronger? Of course this is Movistar and no one has been able to figure out what they are doing pretty much this entire season. So there's that as well.

They are racing two different races. Quintana is racing basically with the support of the team except for Valverde. Valverde is racing his own race with no support.
Carapaz's support for Valverde while leaving Quintana behind yesterday makes that difficult to sustain.
