It did remind me of the Degenkolb sprint from a few years ago. There was a crash I believe with something like 700m to go, and he had no choice but to throttle up the whole time.

I thought I saw Valverde in fourth wheel around 1km out but then he didn't try to contest for bonus time ? Maybe he figured it's not worth the risk, and maybe he was right, that was unusual
