It doesn't matter whether or not you're in the front of the group, either.

Adam's not slaving to widen the gap.

Yeah, but Izagirre was riding the same tempo as Fuglsang anyway, so it makes no sense leaving him hanging 20 meters behind. Besides, I don't think Izagirre will be very happy with Fuglsang trying to ride his teammate off the podium.
