Well there is hope. He's still young and he has time to realize that with Shcleck, Shcleck, Kloden, Horner, Monfort..... he won't get oportunities any time soon. Saxo Bank would have been a good option indeed. There he could basically choose which races he wanted to ride. Even if Contador had stayed he could still have lots of freedom.

"an year since he has had a decent performance?" - I disagree with this. He has lots of decent performances. But not really a breakthrough performance. Maybe you're right and he doesn't know how to peak.....

Since he's having a light early season, I hope he can peak for Vuelta and ride the Worlds. Do you know if Rui Costa is targetting it? He was top20 last year so maybe he could do a little better this year and maybe crack the top15. Paulinho, Machado, Pires, Cardoso would make a decent support.....

well his performance on the TDU was decent but had he been smarter he could have done better, he attacked too soon and once he got caught he was too tired to fight with gerrans and piti for the win. he should had went when rogers (i think it was him) went which was around 2k to go.

his algarve performance wasn't bad either but he got dropped like a stone by porte who is no contador and then failed miserably on the itt (he had a bad day). i hope he does well in romandie tho, looking at the parcours he could win on them if he is in good form.

anyway costa is targeting the worlds indeed, he won't ride the giro nor the vuelta and he may even skip the tour to focus entirely on the worlds and lombardia so i think he can do a good result on both.

i can't wait to see how he goes tomorrow.

about the portuguese team . . . who is the current manager? he should tell the riders to show themselves more often. when was the last time portugal had 1 rider in the breakaway of a worlds race?

I don't even know who's the manager. Andre Cardoso has been the only rider that performs decently every year. Rui and Manuel did OK last year but it was a "special" route :) But yeah, why not send someone ahead? It's not like Portugal is supposed to chase down anything.

exactly, every year it's the same thing. its almost as if they are only doing the race cus they are forced to it.

if they were smart either cardoso or paulinho should be in the early break this year and costa and machado should attack before the favorites go for it so at least they show themselves.

I don't think some of them care much about the worlds or nationals. Maybe Machado will ride the Nationals this year since he's not riding the Giro or Tour. At least get the jersey to show in decent races.

well rui cares about the worlds and machado also does. do you remember the whole 2008 fight with the manager because he didn't bring machado to the u23? machado was very upset as he wanted to do the race and he would have been a great addiction to the team that also add costa and rodrigues.

machado didn't race the worlds last season because he had some injury on his knee from the vuelta.

Rui obviously cares since he wants to be a classics rider. I was thinking more of the nationals. Last year I think none of the guys in the international peloton rode the road race.

i think manuel cardoso did, but i am not sure. to be honest tho i am not very keen to see neither rui nor machado as national champions because both the shack and movistar have been doing a good job at ruining national champion jerseys :p

That much is true. Horrible jerseys. I would like a portuguese national champion jersey a bit like the one Andy Schleck had in 2009.

With only 9 riders finishing so far ahead of the rest, I can see an almost impossible situation for Rabo to control.
Another Catalunya queen stage maybe, but will it the same end result, given the conditions?

Depends, they could yet cancel Navacerrada, wouldn't be too tricky to control if that was the case :)

If the snow stops then hopefully it will melt off the roads fairly readily but we'll see, the earlier two climbs are only slightly lower than the final one so i wonder what conditions there are like? They've set off anyway, with 11 people jumping off the front. They are...

41 Simon, Jordi, 51 Aramendia, Fco Javier, 64 JEANDESBOZ, Fabrice, 91 Bizkarra, Mikel, 92 Etxebarria, Aritz, 105 ALARCON, Raul, 116 LILL, Darren, 118 Rabie, Johann, 167 Oyola, Robigzon , 182 CAMAÑO, Iker and 195 TAARAMAE, Rein

Some riders wanted the stage or the climbs or whatever to be cancelled. The most vocal of them seems to have been Hilary S****.

Plaza's response?
"You shouldn't have dropped out of school then! Let's go!"

Hillary usually rides quite well in the rain/cold, in fact that's the only weather in which I've seen him do well in quite some time.
