for basques samu is basque. he's been raciing in pais vasco since he was a novice and went through all the youth teams.
They love him and appreciate him for sticking around, and they see him as a true Euskaltel hero, but that's not the same as being a Basque. When the stated mission of the Euskadi fundation is to allow Basque youths to turn pro and ride the big events while representing the Basque Country, having Samu but losing the likes of Castroviejo and Intxausti due to budget constraints is a bit of a contradiction.

they have anton and neither castroviejo or intxausti will ever be as big as those 2. anton is also most popular. it's not as big as it was with mayo, zubeldia, laiseka yes, but those days are over for now

No, they'll never be as good, but they'd still add much needed depth to the team. Castroviejo in particular is very underrated. I imagine the likes of Gorka Izagirre, Landa or Sicard (if he ever races again) won't stay in the team for long either if this goes on. They barely managed to keep Nieve for 2012.

Well, if Anton wins the Vuelta I'd already call him better than Mayo. Castroviejo should indeed have been kept, because he has a different skill talent than just climbing. Wouldn't hurt them in TTTs.

I meant Castroviejo and Intxausti won't be as good as Antón and Samu. Ryo brought up Mayo just to reference the times when Euskaltel had a bigger budget.

Why on Earth would Samu do that?

I agree, Samu is too good to ride for a guy who want to win everything, they could ride as two leaders in stage races but that has been demonstrated to not work very good in other teams, they help each other much better staying in differents teams :D

The move of Intxausti was not for the money as far as I know. He comes from a big cycling family and couldn't cope with the pressure of both his family and the Basque country when riding for Euskaltel. Castroviejo is a close friend of him.

samu sanchez has lifed most time of his childness in pais vasco didn't he? he rode for euskatel junior squad during his whole youth didn't he? so if you asked me his home is pais vasco isn't it? so in my eyes it's much more important what he is in his heart than where he was born. don't know what the basques are thninking in that matter, but i would say for them it's at least quite the same feeling?

Yes, he also never knew his father and his mother is dead. You could say the Basques adopted him.

I bet the RFEC don't make a decision before the Vuelta. There has been no news about a hearing being scheduled, AFAIK. By the way, does anyone know what happened to Sevilla's case?

I hope and want Anton to win. He's my favourite Spanish rider.

I don't see Cadel winning as he'll be too tired though he hinted on TV this morning that he won't ride la vuelta so he may not be riding.

Gesink would be good to see. Hope he recovers well enough to count on the climbs. I don't want him him to win because the Dutch fans will go crazy ;)

Was Evans on Australian morning tv or something?

there is no case. no doping was found so he's free to ride. same is going to happen with mosquera but in spain(?) they postpone the hearings etc.

I don't see why there would be no Sevilla case when there is still a Mosquera case. Their cases are virtually identical, I believe.

You're the half basque so you will know this situation better than me but from my experience, the only thing better than someone born into the cause, is someone who joins the cause from the outside comes to truly believe in it and make sacrifices for it.

Paul the Apostle is the most revered Christian saint.

My countries 2 greatest heroes, after whom the major roads and plazas are named, were lithuanians.

The Greatest Russian according to Russians was a Georgian. Serb nationalists worship a Croat.

The Wolves Balloo and even Bagiera defend Mowgli from their own even though he is their enemy.

Samu is Mowgli. He was born a man but raised a wolf. And as a result he has skills not available to the wolves (descending, time trialing, staying on 2 wheels etc.)

So they need him. they helped him, now he helps them and as a result he becomes their greatest and most important member, and they love him for it.

Were they Lithuanians, or Poles born in Lithuania (one is Pilsudski, right?)

Nice post. Another great example would be Johan Cruyff at Barca.

mosquera is allowed to ride. you do know that right? only reason he isn't racing is vacansoleil not letting him. the stuff he took isn't illegal to take as long as it's through the nose I believe? which is what happened. mosquera will for sure be acquitted in a hearing just like sevilla was. the only thing they can do is retest samples but as long as nothing illegal is found they can't suspend you
