No, he is the quickest of the riders that were able to stay in the peloton today. Sprinting in road cycling is not about being the fastest in a flat stage, it is as much about surviving as it is about that final push.

Well my comment wasn't meant to be taken that serious. I really dislike Hushovd so getting a chance to call him a 2nd rate sprinter, I couldn't pass up on that. I'm not taking anything away from his win today, just merely stating that he isn't able to compete in a sprint with the big boys.

Oh and by the way: if sprinting isn't about being the fastest in a flat stage, it is as much about surviving (...) you might aswell say that climbing isn't about being the fastest up the hill, it is as much about surviving.

Stating that surviving is necessary to win is stating the obvious.

Yeh Hushovd is a 2nd rate sprinter atm and he never was the best sprinter too, but what really makes this guy a class rider is that he able to win these stages. The stages were all the 1st tier sprinters are 10 minutes behind because all they can do is a sprint.

I don't know how you define "close", but Hushovd was second in 3 normal bunch sprints last year, and looked to be the 2. fastest sprinter in the race at that time.

Obviously this year he's a lot slower though, and hasn't been close to winning a real bunch sprint. Finishes like this are perfect for him though, and I think today he proved why is one of the favourites for worlds.

Hushovd is someone that doesn't excel at anything, but he's decent in everything.

He used to excel at sprinting, but that seems to be over now. He'll never win anything big to be honest(perhaps the worlds if the course suits him perfectly) just because he doesn't excel in something.
He can't win real mountain stages.
He can't win real sprinting stages(anymore)
He can't win the big cobbled classics.
He can't win real time trials.
etc
