There must have been an issue for both Lopez and Roglič on the gravel. Lopez had his elbow blodied and got caught by Q and Valverde, while Roglič just lost half a minute, before clawing it all back (at least to Valverde).

For all the drama and Soler's shenanigans, as a team Movistar got it right. Quintana was clearly stronger than Valverde and got the red jersey as well. It just so happened that one guy was even stronger than him.

Now, how all this influences the mood in their dinner table , is a completely different matter altogether.:D

The rain changed the dynamics of the climb.
Excellent victory for Pogacar and UAE.
Pogacar's setting a high standard for the coming seasons with such a debut.

It’s one of those comic tragedies. Soler is an Avenir winner finally off on his own and he has to wait for Nairo who can’t hold onto a 20 year olds wheel.
Soler is a domestique who should wait for his captaib who has a realistic shot at winning the Vuelta.

Pogacar was on a stellar day but he also profited from all the work Quintana did before he attacked. Guess who should have been there working for his captain.

Nice comeback by MAL, who crashes more than Van de Velde in his crashing prime.
Who says it was a comeback?

I’m not knocking Nairo, just that I can understand Soler’s disappointment. He has been selfless in his support for his team leaders for years now.

Ultimately, I think Movistar probably did everything right. Didn't look like Soler was going to be able to win anyway and they're now in Red. Still, I'm sure Soler would have at least liked a shot at it.

A shame Lopez crashed.

As Nygaard put it; their de-briefings are going to be… interesting.

Unbelievable stage. Right when the tension is ratcheted up to the max, a hailstorm kills the race TV pictures and radio communications! Roglic looks to be in serious trouble, but then grinds out an impressive recovery. Valverde attacks to bring the Lopez group back toward Quintana (and Roglic, too). Meanwhile, Pogacar takes the race! Chapeau! He's 20 years old. Lopez must have hit the deck and pays for his early bravery. It was the right idea, and it almost worked, but at the end of the day Roglic is still there, just a handful of seconds behind Quintana. Lopez and Valverde also strong. Pogacar on the rise. Another shakeup will come on Tuesday.
