It's been a while since they've done this so obviously, but a decade or so ago there always used to be an agreement on the last stage that retiring riders would be allowed to attack and come through the tunnel and enter the circuit as a ceremonial breakaway ahead of the field so that they can say goodbye to the crowds and take an ovation that was for them rather than for the bunch as a whole one last time. I recall Bingen Fernández and David Moncoutié both doing similar. It used to be that a group of the retiring riders would come through, so I'm surprised that Valverde is on his own when doing it.

Credit to Ineos for trying with that, but that was very poorly executed, I think Carapaz then decided he wanted to sprint to stop Arensman from getting bonus time in case Rodríguez comes in the top 3 of the stage but that seems a pretty far-fetched justification. I think Mas is just going for pride and trying to get the time gap down by a few seconds? Not really sure what he's aiming for there.

Third in the points competition? For some reason.

Yea, I hadn't realised that that got UCI points. He's in the top 3 of all 3 competitions if that's the case and by being 3rd in both points and GPM gets an additional 40 for Movistar, giving him a haul of 844 for the race as long as he finishes today.

This would also put him in the lead of the combinada if they still kept that.

They do? Or was it just you who woke up in a particularly bad mood today? I seem to think there could be a correlation there...

Okay, they weren't ready for that sprint but at least they admitted it.
Im in a perfect mood despite feeling a bit hungover, thank you very much! Still a very productive day before watching some cycling in bed (Im going early to bed today, not because Im in a bad mood) before another shift at the office next week.

Not realising there's a sprint and ignoring where Rodriguez actually placed which is the only thing you gonna focus on, ignoring Carapaz taking 3rd for some reason as well..

EDIT: Also, I dont think you can be a commentator while completely ignoring the existence of the relegation battle going on. Those things affect races, and just discounting the system as dumb and don't pay attention to it is not very professional at all.

They had talked about the one-second difference earlier in the stage (but yes, they should of course have been alert).

They also have discussed the relegation system earlier in the race. But yes, they could focus a little more on it (even though there is no doubt that Israel and Lotto will be the ones to relegate).

Edit: Enjoy your early bed-time. I'm desperately afraid of my working day tomorrow given that I probably won't get to bed this side of 2 am because of the US Open final.

Also, you should watch the GP de Montréal before bed!
