This is either a wild miscalculation by the other GC teams or an indication of just how little they respect O'Connor's GC chances.
I think it is likely both.

No matter what the outcome, I'm now an O'Connor fan. Simply masterclass effort and good tactics to use a stage as a major breakaway. The nature of the roads means the chasers are almost always going mano a mano with O'Connor, so if you're strong, advantage breakaway.

I guess we have Kuss of 2024 Vuelta. At least this one is undisputed leader of the team so whoever wants to take his jersey will need to ride and put whole team to the cause.

Did he not do a great ride at the Tour a few years a go and also in 2023 to help Gall win a stage

I can imagine Roglič taking back lots of time from O'Connor, even though that won't be easy either, but not convinced anyone else will be able to. Weird buy really fun day

It's brilliant to not have to control when you can't miss a stage to blast it because you're 5 minutes down to a guy that doesn't drop minutes for fun.
Maybe not for fun, but I'm also in the disrespect club. He's more a podium threat than overall threat.

Ben O’Connor finished 4th in the 2021 Tour after pulling something similar on Tignes in a stronger field. Would not be taking him too lightly.

If I didn't know better, I could have been fooled into thinking I was rewatching stage 17 of the 2006 Tour de France. Some teams have been as stupid as they were back then. Just a shame it was Leemreize who played the Sinkewitz role here instead of Lipowitz.
