You can't compare this stage to stage 6, the time gap doesn't mean anything yet. Time Gap will become interesting in the first Hazallenas ascent, but even then, the peloton could probably easily reel in 3-4 minutes on the second one.

You just don't real in 4 minutes on guys like Yates on a 7km climb what

The 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the US were late July to early August. So there's no excuse for that reported scheduling of the 2028 summer Olympics.

As such the Tour should just ignore it & carry on as per usual. It'll always be way bigger than the Olympics anyway (for cycling that is).
Sure, and I don't doubt that most top riders will choose the Tour. But I want both races to be as good as possible, and I don't want the defending Olympic champion(Remco) missing the race because he's doing GC at the Tour.

Whether an overlap will be the fault of the IOC or ASO doesn't really matter in the end. If both races end up with a weaker field because riders have to choose between them, the whole sport will lose out.

And on that note, let's see how they'll do in 2028.

Olympics run from july 14th to 30th, so either TdF starts super early or it runs in august.
Could back end the road cycling events (it's very few who cross over to track and MTB) and have the Tour finish on the 16th or 23rd and have the road cycling take place in the final week of Olympics

Kinda scared about this descent finish because it is so goddamn fast.

@Devil's Elbow did you want the 2nd post for the image limit cause then I'll just delete my post
Well right now the two best climbers in the race are the two most crash prone GC riders in the race. It's a frightening thought to think what might happen were Mas and Roglic to cross the final climb with a gap and try and gain more time on the descent. Mas would probably need a crash to stay with Roglic since he goes downhill about as fast as my deceased grandmother descended a staircase when she was 97 years old.

So is the collective forum gonna have a meltdown from here on out each and everytime some half decent rider gets 2minutes in a breakaway attempt? Some of you need to get some air i think
Seems like it. Particularly on a stage like this, where the long hard parts are yet to come, this time gap means nothing.

That year the Tour ended the same weekend as the Olympics began. If they follow the same pattern, it will start at June 23rd.

The thing is also media attention. The Tour is now a much mediatic product than it was 30 years ago. It's a multi million dollar product and can't afford to share media time and resources with other global sports products. Does ASO want to have their race decided while the world's attention is focused on some other product? Media outlets may need to divert resources to the USA, etc. And while in France the Tour may keep the biggest share of the audience, I don't think the same applies to other markets (particularly outside Europe) that ASO may have their eyes on.

In 1996 it was also the first time cycling was open to professionals, nowadays is also a much more valuable goal for cyclists.

Yates was one of the pre-race favourites and now is 5 minutes up the road.
