Vuelta a España Vuelta a España 2024, stage 9: Motril - Granada, 179.2k

IMO the real problem with the current GT spread is that they've moved them further and further forward. Vuelta was a September race, Giro was anywhere between mid-May and early June until not very long ago, and the Tour has also started to creep into June. Makes the weather a lot more problematic for both Giro and Vuelta. IMO Giro should start in the 3rd weekend of May, Tour the weekend before Bastille Day, and Vuelta first or second weekend of September. Of course, that doesn't really work in an Olympic year, but the trend exists outside those years too + shouldn't impact the Vuelta.
And on that note, let's see how they'll do in 2028.

Olympics run from july 14th to 30th, so either TdF starts super early or it runs in august.

Oconnor is 4minutes in front of Roglic. He could literally let Yates get back some it wouldnt really change anything for him. It would for Roglic/Bora tho if Yates manages to find his form back by the end of the 2nd week.
Gaudu is at 06:30, Yates is at 09:30. Ag2R will work once the break goes up to 06:00. Best case for UAE / Yates right now is that Yates gains 3 minutes on Roglic, which will hardly bother him.

Heavens know how they will structure the 2028 season with the Olympics on 14 to 29 July. They could push everything back in the season. Have the giro start the third week of May or even the last week, TDF to start at end of July and the Vuelta in Mid September. Then have the world's in the second week of October.

Wtf I had no idea.

Honestly, I can see them ignoring Olympics and just let em overlap with the TdF and not giving a ***. Actually fully expect the ASO to not budge.
Depends when the road cycling is in the Olympics schedule as they won’t care about a few trackies having to choose between Tour and Olympics but they won’t want to see Pogacar skip it again or lose Remco.

If they put the ITT on the middle Wednesday (26th July) and the men’s RR on the final Saturday (29th July) you could have the TDF run 24th June to 16th July and then fly straight out to LA.

TDFF could run a week after the end of the men’s race with the women’s Olympics road events in the very start of the Olympics schedule.

You can't compare this stage to stage 6, the time gap doesn't mean anything yet. Time Gap will become interesting in the first Hazallenas ascent, but even then, the peloton could probably easily reel in 3-4 minutes on the second one.

Something to consider is the fact the 2028 summer Olympics are in L.A. The time zone difference in particular should mean there's minimal overlap in terms of TV scheduling.
But overlapping will prevent riders from doing both races. It would be sad if the Olympics had a weak field because it overlaps with the Tour. The Olympics this year was full of big names who came straight from the Tour.

The 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the US were late July to early August. So there's no excuse for that reported scheduling of the 2028 summer Olympics.

As such the Tour should just ignore it & carry on as per usual. It'll always be way bigger than the Olympics anyway (for cycling that is).
