Yeah, but because the stage is so short, I don't expect the gruppetto to be more than 40 minutes behind at the top of the second climb. Heck, they'd probably need to be more than 45 minutes down after 84 km to be lapped. In that case, they'd fall for the time-cut anyway.
EDIT: Hmm, maybe more like 35'-40'.
IIRC you could extend the loop 3-4km by doing mindless loops around the ski resort area.

I take it in jest, but the guy is a quality rider, and the conditions can be deadly, heat stroke is what was reported. Looking at the race, guy is flying, has chance to walk w white jersey, great daily and overall results. For him to quit, without a serious crash, without something physically stopping him, limb falling off, his abandonment should be seen as serious. Guy wouldn't give up unless he was forced to..

It can happen

Hard to tell if the issue with Kuss is partially lingering effects of Covid (even in stage 3 in Burgos he didn't look as strong as I would expect - he seemed to be laboring a lot on that final climb) or that everyone on the team is crap. His team looks Conti caliber at best .

Real bummer. He was going so well. Hopefully he can come back strong in the Italian autumn races. Although I think GTs are where he really shines.
He was quite good in Lombardia 2023 and again in Liege 2024 despite working a lot for his teammates, so I reckon he can deliver some decent results in a long hard race despite not being particularly explosive.
That said, heatstrokes are no joke. From what I've heard he stopped on the first ascent of Hazallanas, then tried to continue for a few kms but eventually had to abandon.

So the team plan was go for the stage -

"I honestly didn't give a sh*t about GC today, it was all about the stage," Yates concludes. "I just went full gas. We really had nothing to lose so yeah, I just suffered all the way to the line."

Bora & Roglic have now lost lots of minutes to 2 different guys going up the road, which I think shows a weak team. Roglic not being able to follow Mas and going full Covid face mask at the start, is not a good sign. Maybe Bora's weakness is a bug going around?

I think you're being a bit dramatic there. Okay fair, they underestimated BOC. But Yates wasn't 09:30 down on BOC for no reason. He said himself, that he wasn't in it for the GC. But you're also right, RBBH doesn't have a team as commanding as peak Sky or Visma - they clearly need to choose their battles. But not everything hinges on them, others with a stake in GC are not prohibited to do some work.

His rise to fame was quickly followed and eclipsed by the dawn of the super riders era. But since then, there's almost no one else who as regularly show himself and try something in big races - be it brilliant or sad - without being considered a freak talent or one of the big boys. In this crazy time, it's easy to overlook that Richard Carapaz is such a star.
carapaz literally always delivers something worth heaps of fantasy cycling points (except if crashing out of the le tour)
