It's just a choice about calories!! UAE decides race after race that the energy spent, burned to stay in front is worth it.. Other teams start farther back and say why bother, easier to hide from wind in the bunch.

OK, it's underway.
On a flat plain far away from home.
The commentators are also far away, so far that the otherwise famous Lingotto has apparently become a velodrome.
The Po plain so picturesque that even the TV MC chose to extend the approach on a mountain sprint, rather than follow who actually won it. Beautiful chaos, as usual.

But nice to see that I was wrong about Philipsen. Nice to see him back in full force.

Vine will be attached to Ayuso and Almeida tomorrow.. UAE is not Trek or BH all their energy is for winning the race, not blowing anyone up on day 2. The only place Vine is going is back to the car for water whenever anyone asks.

Alpecin did manage to stay near the front for the last 20km while JV did most of the heavy lifting. Great finish and equally great decision to hold GC time at 5km. Those last 5km had enough traffic furniture to eliminate half the peloton if they'd all raced it for the "UCI points". Still couldn't ignore that Mr. Coquard had some squirrelly moments in the last km but managed not to take anyone out. UCI still needs to change the points awards to lessen the carnage; Cofidis and Astana riders don't deserve to have that pressure just to remain an active team.
