I can't imagine another sport which has such a combination of cricket-like eras of nothingness (e.g. TdF flat stage) and football-like intensity and speed (e.g. TdF flat stage sprint finish). The vast majority of people couldn't do either of those things, but Kirby - whatever you think of him - is quite good at filling air time and decent at calling a sprint. He may not be the most knowledgeable, and I think ES could improve the pairings, but he's quite impressive for such a hard sport to commentate on.

But they have more to lose today maybe than to win. A good day for Henao, yes, but it is better for then to play two cards in Arrate.

If they want to win with someone of the two they have to try to gain the maximum amount of seconds, and tomorrow the climb suits more Contador and Quintana and usually there aren't big differences in Arrate.

Going to the TT with this differences it's a risk.

If they want to win and they have to take Landa or Henao out of GC contention, that's the right move to do.

Honestly, the only things I look for in someone in Kirby's position is that he is entertaining and that he likes the sport.

He never does look tired, though Doesn't matter if he's absolutely flying or dropping out the back - the grimace remains the same

Kirby may be quite impressive at times, but they could do better by having former riders handle the commentating such as Matt Stephens. They tried that for a few US races last year, with Frankie Andreu and Tim Johnson. They made the entire broadcast worth watching, even during the flat parts of the stages, because they knew what the riders were going through and could express that to the viewers, which is a vast improvement on Kirby to say the least.

It's an old road to the Aritzmendi farm. There are hundreds like that in this part of Guipuzkoa.

Bordako Tontorra being another. Not sure why they fully paved so many of them.
