Vuelta Stage 16: Circuito de Navarra - Logroño (40.2km)

Stage description

ITT. 42-kilometre long flat individual time trial, among vineyards and wineries. A route for true specialists that will make big differences to the general classification. The stage is also twice as dangerous as it is being held straight after a rest day.

The Navarra Circuit is a unique infrastructure. Its 3,933 metres form an attractive, very technical route. With the capacity to hold Formula 1 training sessions, the circuit is prepared to receive the peloton and, thus, join a select list of circuits such as the Jarana, Jerez and Assen that have already hosted the Vuelta on previous occasions.

Finish
Logroño's Vuelta history began in 1941 with a victory by Delio Rodríguez. That year, the Spanish rider won 12 Vuelta stages. Since then, a prestigious list of riders has won in the La Rioja capital: Bernard Hinault, Eric Vanderaerden, Nicola Minali and Óscar Freire, among others. The last one to do so was the German sprinter John Degenkolb, in 2012 and 2014

Disclaimer: He did quite well compared to Froome in the main ITT's in the Dauphne and Tour this year, so it's not completely out of the question.

Disclaimer: He did quite well compared to Froome in the main ITT's in the Dauphne and Tour this year, so it's not completely out of the question.

and if Assen, Netherlands, is in that list they had to add Estoril, Portugal who hosted a stage finish in '97.

Froome has implied that he is going to save some energy for tomorrow's stage which is bizarre.

Nibali lost 55 seconds to Dumoulin in the 28km Monza TT. That's 2 seconds per km.
And Dumo has stated himself that he eased off a bit in the second half after the team told him not to take so many risks.
If a risk averse Dumo can pull 2 seconds per km into Nibali, I think it is safe to say that e fit Froome can pull 1.5 seconds per km into him.
42*1.5 =63 seconds is my prediction

No it wasn't. It had 20 curves in total (excluding the Monza circuit curves which in cycling speeds are more like flat roads) all 90 degrees and all in wide roads

There has to be a reason why Rohan Dennis participates in this Vuelta, right? So, he is going to make it 7/7 today.
For the GC, I don't think Nibali will lose more than a minute to Froome, he certainly won't be caught
Contador and Kelderman will be good, Zakarin to drop a few places.

This TT is tailor made for Froome. Flat, non technical and all about raw power. Froome by about 30-40 seconds with Lampaert, Oliveira, Kelderman and jungels to fill the top 5 places. I expect that Nibali will lose over a minute today.

I think this could be a very strange TT in which Froome ends up winning the stage since not so many great TT'ers are riding the vuelta but he won't gain that much time since his TT shape this year hasn't been great. I think the most likely scenario is that Nibali will lose around a minute to Froome maybe a little more.
