Amburon

Amburon

A fairly new Tongeren ale (came onto the market in the last couple of years) currently on special at my local at the moment.

The name is presumably a portmanteau of Ambiorix - a statue of whom stands in Tongeren - and the Eburons, the tribe of which Ambiorix was king during the Romans' Gallic campaign.

This beer is a blonde with pleasant grassy flavours and a mild hop bitterness. Really rather decent for a new brew. :)

Svea IPA

The problem with the De Struise brewery is that sometimes I allow myself to believe that I will get as much joy from their other beers as I do from the renowned Pannepot.

Even for an IPA, this one's pretty thin. It's comes with a longlasting, citrus tang but it seems rather insubstantial, which makes the bitterness on the finish quite surprising. Not bad overall, but expensive for what it is.

Westvleteren 12 on public sale in Belgium from November 3rd

OK, folks it's official! A while ago I reported on this thread what I thought was an absurd newspaper story, but it turns out to be true.

For a limited time only and from this November 3rd, you'll be able to buy 63,000 Westvleteren 12 6-packs for €25 a shot in a Belgian supermarket near you.

The supermarket is Colruyt (I have one a couple of streets away <rubs hands />) and you'll need to buy a copy of De Standaard, Le Vif or Knack and cut out the coupon, which you take to the supermarket.

And, my dear Belgian non-residents, the abbey (which is funding necessary repairs with this sale) has said that it is considering a similar international sale next year.

ok, it's not beer. but soooo goooood and it is freaking hot here today!

With the weather changing the beverage of choice is too.
How do you think a "What wine are you drinking?" thread would go over here in CNland?

Wow. It looks odd to see a label on a bottle of 12.

I kind of hope they are so wildly successful with this hey decide on permanent commercial release. They won't, but I can hope.

Do you suppose the monks have their quality control issues conquered? The 12's I had at In de Vrede in April were disappointing.

I so hope they sell this in Australia. If so, and it's not anywhere where I live, I will consider traveling there just to purchase this.

Scott, I've never heard of a crap Westvleteren 12, so that's a bit worrying, but I can totally believe it. I should qualify though that Belgians do not really hold the stuff on quite so high a pedestal as we foreigners might.

I should also say I've yet to try one despite being here over three years, so that accounts for my keenness.

I really don't know about long-term commercialisation. I'm not really "in the know" about beer issues. Some folks I've chatted with reckoned that the new De Vrede was itself indicative of the direction they might take but they still continue to tease us all with that 'pious goals' thing. What I think is: if they can square it with the Man Upstairs at Saint-Rémy and Orval, then surely Sint-Sixtus can do likewise. ;)

Craig, it would be nice, wouldn't it? Denmark, the Netherlands and the United States would probably get first shake of the tail if the men in cloth do any sort of market research. Look out for it on eBay though. A case or two ending up on there is sort of inevitable. :)

I love to travel and my dad has always encouraged me to do so, and I love cycling as well. And life is sad if you can't enjoy a beer or two every now and then.

If somebody will offer me a job in Belgium, I'll move there in a heartbeat just for the Westvleteren 12.

Send your resume to Marco at Brouwerij St Bernardus in Watou. It's close to Westvleteren and the Sint Sixtus Abbey.

http://www.sintbernardus.be/

St Bernardus is growing and they are a bunch of really fun people... plus you'll have front row seats for Gent-Wevelgem every year.:D

Now this is surprising. If you can find some 12 that has been cellared for a year or more make sure to take advantage. It is the finest beer I have ever had. The black fruit and berries are just so powerful... and that combination with the well developed maltiness... well, it's just exceptional and quite a treat.

I've still got some WV 8 and 12 that was made in 2009. It just keeps getting better...

it's my b-day so i got myself three good ol' weissbiers on the way home, all different of course. love the stuff. recommendations are wellcome too, though i suspect finnish retailers only carry a fraction of the options.

Erdingers are pretty fruity for the style, so if you like your beer a bit playful, those might work well for you.

If you can find any Belgian whites up your way, have a look for Blanche de Namur, which is increasingly recognised internationally these days. Pretty much all Belgian whites (except homogenised Hoegaarden) taste very strongly of coriander, which is a flavour I really like. :)
